Just took out a 5ft grey kangaroo on the near side in my 03' GU with factory fitted alloy bar. Was travelling about 105km/h when the big fella took me on. Smashed the bar, tore the alloy at the bottom, pushed in smashed the headlight, pushed in the guard, marked the bonnet, smashed bonnet protector, spot lights and pushed the bar sideways and back. Got the picture. Anyway it protected everything else which is the main thing I suppose.
Looking for replacement, what do you think, go the genuine alloy bar again or try steel or some other brand other then genuine?

If you're considering a factory alloy replacement then you have enough cash to get a decent steel bullbar.

if ya think ya going to hit another roo then you really should think about steel over alloy as alloy is piss weak. heres a pic of mine i got made last week
hes just about to start another bull bar for a feroza and the ferozer owner wants it to stop roos aswell.

Yeah the bar on the feroza may stop the roo's but what about the feroza crushing into the back of the bar

Go to a country bullbars place like in Toowoomba and get one made up.
I've seen some awesome and strong looking ones getting around up there on GU's and 100 series cruisers. They're not like the B&S ute ones. They are tough and have plenty of clearance still.
I head out to Dalby heaps to see the GF's parents and see heaps of them getting around.
When I get my new GU, if it has a gay alloy one I'll be upgrading to one of these......

The steel ARB bars & look alikes I've seen should be solid enough to deal with the average roo and should raise less insurance question or undue attention from the law.

there as good as a sahara bar, of couse they are not a good protection wise as a plate ARB bar, but they are stronger than an alloy one and they are a comprimise between protection and aproach angles. if you ant hoops over the lights than we can do them for ya as well

The tube bar would only give limited protection on tracks too. I recently hit a rock at Gembrook and pushed the top RHS of my ARB steel bar and side rail back onto the top of the guard. The guard was the only thing damged, no grill or bumper damage and without the bar there would have been heaps of damage. I did end up with a new bar and a new set of side rails via Insurance, no questions asked. IMHO I reckon a nice steel bar and side rails looks good, but as someone else said, taste is a personal thing. Whatever style bar you get, make sure its steel though. Alloy is great for making beer cans, and if your old enough to remember, you didnt crush steel beer cans in your hand.
That's another issue, if you have a custom made bar and try & claim replacement on insurance it could get interesting, same as a custom rear tray, and if it's not your insurance forking out, they may pay SFA.Red_MAv wrote:The tube bar would only give limited protection on tracks too. ARB, Tube bars all good. I have a cheezy front bar with single hoop and have hit a few roos, a few fences and a few trees and it has held on strong. I have no worries about driveing through the country home from work at night. THANKYOU MR CHEESEMAN! YOU MAKE GOOD BARS. You outerlimit bullbar gurus do know that a bullbar is not a bullbar if it doesnt have a white UHF aerial on it though right?........

Ive never understood the point in custom tube bars either really - an ARB or similar steel bar is going to offer far more protection against a roo strike and will be properly engineered and designed to work in conjunction with standard safety features, like airbags etc!
The hardest thing about owning a jeep is telling your parents you're g a y!!
Thanks for the input people. The custom bars might be good for certain applications but if I did'nt have protection around the headlights I would be up for a new bonnet, guard, and probally more, even the alloy bar gave good protection here and stopped the animal comming in over the top......this was a big Roo and with the drought they are more frequent than ever grazing on the side of the road.
How do the steel bars go with the standard drivers side air bag on my rig? And to answer the question NRMA insurance are footing the bill..I've been told I can replace with whatever comes up to the price of the factory alloy replacement.

Get s steel bar, take ur pic on preferable type, but definatly steel
also maybe a winch bar like ARB as they are generally stronger and normal steel bars to hold the winch etc even if u dont run a winch the strength is there
