URGENT HELP PLEASE ,Big block Chevy alternator wiring

Post by DamTriton »

Yes I have searched.....

I am presently giving Cheezy a hand to wire up his new Buggy for WERock this weekend. (using the motor and running gear out of his old rig)

Could anyone tell me the pinouts of the Delco(?) alternator that is fitted to the Chevvy 7.3 ltr (454) engine.

To describe the terninals looking at it from the back:

12 o'clock Altenator out, (obvious). (Reference for orientation.)

2 o'clock plastic insulated earth (?) - Phillips head eye connector (assuming that to be earth, measures a dead short to earth on the chassis loom)

3-4 o'clock is a black two pin connector. On the loom side there is a variable resistance to earth on one wire of about 14 ohm, the other about 25-30 ohm. I am assuming from other similar entries that one would be the lamp connector (other end to +ve) and one would be battery sense. could anyone tell me which is which??? i.e. the 3 o'clock terminal is...... and the 4 o'clock terminal is.....

The big problem is neither vehicle has a battery fitted (or can ATM) and both have incomplete looms so I really have nothing to go on.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Just got this from a website so I can't vouch for it, but it might help.

INDICATOR small connector Pin 1 (blk) small brown/yellow wire
SENSE small connector Pin 2 (red) small brown wire
OUTPUT bolt terminal large brown wire
GROUND case of alternator

Sorry I can't tell you for sure which is which but at least this confirms your assumptions, I think.

If it looks like the image below then as far as I can tell pin 1 is indicator, pin 2 is sensor.

All this is at your risk though, I'm just getting it from the web.
