Leafs Or Coils For Comp Buggy
Hi All.
I am just starting to build a Budget Comp Buggy and was wondering on your thoughts of whether i should go Leaf Springs Or Coil Springs. I want it to flex something cronic as it will also be a show toy. (so i can park it on weird ass angles to promote my sponsors) Your help and thoughts are greatly appreciated. Its a zook chassis and body and is going to be majorly hacked up.

Buggy
i would except i'm trying to keep the budget as low as i can so i just though either leafs or coils and maybe just stuff around and make my own long travel or something along those lines. should be able to get some good travel out of either though.Thor wrote:what about air shocks or coilovers?
thanks for your ideas though Thor.
cheers

buggy leaf (quarter eliptic/ three quarter eliptic what ever you call it with one leaf bolted to the chassis and the spring and shackle bolted to it)

Zook Chassis, hacked up, 1/4 elliptic leaf rear and SPOA front - doesnt get much more simple
Flexes ok - and goes well

What u mean poser FlexBeastmavster wrote:For poser flex no reason why leafs can't do the job. Heaps of leaf luxes and sierras get massive flex.
Probably also be much quicker and cheaper than going to the cost and effort of a full coil conversion.
Use it, get your sponsorship $$$ floating in then assess whether you want the coils.
I have real flex

Work with leaves if budget is a problem, for the price of a decent coil conversion, you could do a custom 3, 4 or 5 link setup and use swayaway or fox air shox.
A set of decent coil springs and shocks would set you back the same amount as a set of air shox and you dont have to worry about springs falling out, coil mounts which are a PITA, and coilovers work well but are $$$$, etc.
Learn from others mistakes, spend wisely and do it right.
I think Gonads buggy started on leaves, then SPOA while it still more a vehicle, then a kind of 3/4 eliptic rear, then he added coilovers on front, now he has airshox on front and 3/4 on rear. I think the rear will go to airshox soon too.

there is no reason why a well set up leaf sprung vehicle would not perform, however there would be significan additional engineering required to set up as apoosed to coil which are easy to set up in comparison, but for the purpose of new shocks, springs etc, it is not much more to go to air shocks at $500.00 per side and get 18" of travel and not exactly hard to set up or a little more expensive go coil over and you dont have to deal with nitrogen etc for ride hieght for a more user friendly approach. If you are going to build a buggy and spend the time and effort into it, now with the P & A of coiloves and airshocks 1 to 2 K more is not much
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!

a well setup leaf sprung rear wont climb like a well setup linked rear
Depending on how manny links, and how the links are set up, A linked car may not climb too
A well set up leaf sprung car will climb, IF IT HAS WHEELBASE as will any other car,
If it wont climb, its not well set up eg. Lack of tracktion and axel wrap
