Oil in intake manifold?

Hey guys,

I have noticed that the inside of my crossover pipe and intake manifold past the turbo is coated with a thin coat of oil. My 75 series cruiser has just had an 80 series turbo diesel engine fitted. The engine donor had done less than 80,000kms. The engine does not blow excessive amounts of smoke compared to my friend's and so far it doesn't seem to consume much engine oil.

Is a small amount of oil normally seen in the intake plumbing past the turbo? Or could the turbo seals be leaking?

Where is the PCV hooked in as this would probably cause it.

There should be a breather tube from the rocker cover to the inlet plumbing before the turbo. The oil film would be from the vapours circulating through this tube.

You could install a catch can to trap the vapour, but you can cause dramas with puffs of white smoke.

Had this prob with my Surf after rumming the catch can for 3 years. Reconnected original pipe, and puffs disappeared. I believe the oil in the vapour helps to seal the compressor seal to a slight extent, and performs some sort of pre-oiling for the engine during its operation.....

pretty normal. I've seen 1HD-FT motors with less than 40,000km and a good coating of oil on the inside of the inlet. keep an eye on the consumption.

Thanks, guys. Good to hear those possible explanations, LOL. Yes cloughy, the PCV line does attach before the turbo. I'll check if the air ducts insides before the turbo are also coated with oil.

I bought a used intercooler and the ducts are also coated with this type of oil. At the time I thought his turbo seals were probably leaking, but now I know better.

Mate I rang APS when I found oil in mine an they said it was normal as the extra plumbing gave the vapuor time to condense and the intercooler made the problem seem worse, they said the oil may weap from the compressed air side of the turbo . These are the people who make my turbo and I dont use oil .
