Mystery noise in the 80

Post by crusher »

My 80 has devloped a ratteling sound that comes and goes. Its quite loud and soundes like a tent peg being poked inte a metal blade fan. My car's a diesil 5 speed. when its making this sound, it stops when you depress the clutch or back off the loud pedal. I've been under the car and cant find anything loose. Anyone got any ideas?

do you have to be moving os still for it to happen

not a loose fan hub with fan hitting the cowling

not a heat shield on the exhaust

thrust bearing in the clutch

broken engine mount (fan contacting cowling) ? I know that is platic on plastic but might still make a metallic sound.

more info on your vehicle might help - lift, tyres etc, age and km, does the sound happen at a particular road speed, or engine rpm? will it make the sound when the vehicle is stopped, or only when driving?

cheers

It only makes the noise when moving and seems to come it around 80 k's
The trucks got a 4in lift and 33"muddies. I'll check the exhaust and heat shields in the morning. Checked the fan against radsiator but didnt check the shroud for marks yet, good idea. The old girl shudders a bit when reversing too and been told that might be an engine mount, what do u reckon?

Haha, I know this sounds stupid but a couple of mates and I wrapped a couple of cable ties around the front driveshaft of a friends 80 and when it got up to speed it 'flicked' the transfer case/tranny and made a ticking like noise.

thanks for the ideas guy's I'll add them to my ever increasing list of stuff to check. I thought it was the front sway bar which was missing a bolt so it dissapeared on sunday, didnt miss it at all up the Wattagans and no noise all day till we were on the tar for about 15 minutes on our way home when it started again. Was I pissed off or what? Back to the drawing board!
