GQ headlight upgrade for next 2 nothing
GQ headlight upgrade for next 2 nothing
Blew one of my sealed beams recently so enquired about better lights, a H4 upgrade with looms is nearly 400 bucks bit steep i reckon. So off to the wreckers, i found Volkswagon Golf 1977 headlight inserts fit, they arnt convex (slight bubble outwards) like original GQ, but they are Hella and they have a nice spread, they are a little bit bigger and deeper which is what i wanted and the regular globe inserts will fit (ignore the wierd looking VW globe if its still there) But keep the retainer. You have to grind off the little tags off the outer back edge of the lamp and then they sit nicely in the GQ recievers. You also need 20mm long 4mm screws to hold them in with the original chrome trim. There you have it better lights for less than $50. There is also a second hole for a parker or yellow fog globe in the reflector.
If you are planning on running big globes like 90/110 you have to relay them, using atleast 12 guage wire. Doing this tommow let you know how it goes.

Thinking I might go back to the really cheap(ok bit cheap) replacment headlights though. As I reckon they have a better reflector.bazzle wrote:turps wrote:Or you could goto repco and buy brand new H4 Headlights for $18each.
Fit straight in too correct
Good job though Brunsy
90/130 globes and relay loom make fab lights on GQ/Mav.. dont even need D Lights.

But the repco one does the job with 90/130watt globes. But I still use the lightforce all the time.
Cos I can.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Speaking of reflectors, has anyone successfully cleaned/polished the standard GQ ones?turps wrote: Thinking I might go back to the really cheap(ok bit cheap) replacment headlights though. As I reckon they have a better reflector.
I think that is the main reason my lights are turd even with high output globes...

Cant be cleaned sucessfully. Can not be polished at all.
If needing tp wash out half fill with soapy dishwashing mix and shake, drain and rinse with clean water. DO NOT try to wipe reflector.
Any slight dulling will reduce light output. They are throw away items, esp at prices they can now be bought for.

I am sick of the standard GQ lights filling with water everytime I go through a bog hole or deep river crossing. The replacements you can get from Repco, is that a whole unit or just the globes? Last time I took them out and cleaned them, I found it a bastard getting them back into the holes, but getting sick of driving around with them full of muddy water!
I just drilled 1/8 drain holes in the bottom of the reflectorsTDiesel wrote:I am sick of the standard GQ lights filling with water everytime I go through a bog hole or deep river crossing.
