The following procedure is for early model (1991 to about 1995) EFI 16v Vitaras (G16B)
Beside the relays just in front of the battery in the engine bay is a "Monitor Coupler"
It is a small 4 pin female plug with a rubber cover.
Remove the rubber cover and holding the plug so that the narrower, rounded end is at the top, put a wire from the top right pin (diagnosis switch terminal) to the bottom left pin (ground). See picture.
Switch the ignition to 'ON' but dont start the engine. Watch the "CHECK ENGINE" light and it will flash. It will flash a number of times, one second break, flash again. Count the flashes before and after the pause and you will get a 2 digit number. eg 1 flash, 1 second break, 2 flashes -> 12 -> Normal operation.
