Holden v6 into 81 lux
Project car is now sitting in the shed and I have started scratching my head, and contemplated the task ahead. First thing on the list is the engine conversion. POS suggests a V* Rover motor, and I have been looking around for a suitably priced one.
Anyway, I have just been offered a v6 commodore motor, auto box, computer, and wiring loom for $650. Appears to me that this may eb the way to go. I know the motor is fairly potent (I used to own the car it came out of) and has a hot chip in the computer.
Any comments about how well they fit in an 81 lux .
Cheers
Pete

Ruff will be the guy to listen out for tonight when he gets on. He has had all manner of engines in cars, and if he hasnt done it, his mates have. I think he recommended against that particular motor, because it acheived peak torque to high, and wasnt that good off road. I could be wrong though. If its going to see a bit of street racing then its probly a good way to go.
I know I couldnt keep up with Toyrantula the other day on the highway and he has a chev V6 in a lux
But, then again, It is likely to be a big improvement over a stock motor, for power gains.

hands and mums dont count!!!
I have a mate with one in an 85 4skinner and he is stoked. It runs 36" TSL's and 80 diffs with about 4.56 or similar. T700 has the lock up with a manual overide switch so he can turn on and off whenever he wants.

Sorry i missed this thread somehow.
I realy dont know what to suggest here as every V6 or V8 conversions have their problems.
Commodore V6= (172KG) Poor drivability below 1500rpm they have very little torque down low and the managment system on them cant cope with low RPM.
Holden V8s=(estimated220KG) Heavy and have oveheating issues when crawling around.
Rover V8=(145KG) Only 3kgs heavier than a 22R toyota 4Cyl(142KG) but is a real tight squeeze in a lux engine bay. I think i am going to have to run my Radiator on the tray for my set-up to work.Although i have seen these fitted with engine fans and getting good results. I am yet to drive mine but from the performance i have seen produced in Range Rovers with these engines i am expecting to be happy. I will have a real opinion within a month.
ChevV6=(4.3L 190.5KG) Heavy and usually carbed but do fit nice.
Im sorry I realy cant suggest anything great and trouble free.

Thanks Ruff.
I thought it might be too good to be true. I had looked at the Rover motor as others recommend it strongly. I also wondered how you could shoehorn one into a lux. Really a bit at a loss now for what to do about a motor in the old Lux. the 18R needs some work and I am sure that it won't produce the power I want when Im finished, so I am loathed to do much with it.
As this will be purely a play car for Comps, night runs etc I also want to keep it fairly simple.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, and it might be time to get the tape out again and look at the rover motor.
Cheers

The V6 fits ok use the auto and possibly low ratio T/case if you have the short wheel base model, or duals in the longy.
The v6 will have enough torque to smoke the 4 tyres off road
Spare parts are easy to find and cheap!
Keep it simple
Price teh adapters
I am looking at this myself but with a LN106 Dual Cab. If you add it all up with adapters and everything you don't see much change from $3000.00 . If anyone has a cheaper way I am all ears

Who does the adapter to suit the transfer to the auto
