8:1 xfer gearing... or other?

Post by markil »

i haven't read about anyones experiences with the 8:1 xfer gearing, and i'm considering it for myself. i've started my buildup just now and want to get some gearing ordered so it'll b ready to go when everything else is too :)

i'll be running 4.1 in the diffs, 35-37" tyres, and i have a GTI engine to go in too. so i was thinking that because the 8:1 has a 24% reduction in high range it should't be too bad on road and the 260% reduction in low certainly is low, so crawling shouldn't be a problem even with the 1.3 GTI engine powering it.

rocky road outfitters is the only distributor i've found for the 8:1 gears, and would cost a touch over $1500 frieghted.

what does everyone else think? :?:

I have heard that it dosn't fit nicely like the 6.5, also with the amount of gears letting go and the rare occasion of the tcase letting go, I wouldn't be that keen to use these gears without a modded tcase. Something like the mighty kong (I think thats what it's called, tim can confirm). I think this is the reason no one is using them at the moment.

Great idea though, just some things to think about first.

with gearing that low you are also putting alot more stress into the driveline (from the T/Case back) as the uni's etc are all under the increased torque load of the lower gears etc ..

how much more reliable would the 6.5:1 compare to the 8:1?

i'm using the stock casing, just going to be beefing up the arms.

thanks guys.

I think you might find the 6.5 more reliable only due to the torque that is getting produced. Another option could be twin cases seeing as you have the room with a LWB.

yeah, i think it may be more reliable too with a 6.5 (bit cheaper too). i haven't really considered twins at all, would be pretty cool having 3 sticks to play with
