ok, after some help here from you toyota guru's.

in my quest to get 36" simex's under the middy, been considering idea of shackle reversal on the front (without spring over i'm thinking) to push front axle forward. measured up old front springs (thought this might be more accurate) and got centre pin is 515mm from fixed end, 560mm from shackle end. note this off car with no weight at all on spring.

now, do you guys think this will achieve my projected 60mm extension of wheelbase? and will this be enough to clear 36" coupled with existing 2" spring lift and soon to be added 2" body lift?

assuming this is feasible, what would also need to be modified: i've thought driveshaft extension, steering shaft extension, relocate top mount for shocks, and ....??

Hi Lance,

I've heard contradicting reports that spring reversals may cause the tie rod to hit the drag link. I suppose the effect may be similar in a shackle reversal. One guy in the US reversed his springs (but did not do a complete shackle reversal) to his MWB BJ74 and said he had no problems, but another guy in Japan he could not do it to his FJ75 because of the interference.

I suppose the only way is to do it on your 73 and see. Please report it here on this forum for all us to learn from :)

Does the 36" Simex actually measure 36 inches? I fitted 35" BFGoodrich M/T tyres under my 75, but they actually only measure 34 inches. The closest point to the tyre on the guard is the rear portion of the wheel arch, so I suppose a suspension or body lift would have much less effect than if the tyre fouls the guard at the top of the arch.

I ended up moving the diff forward by redrilling the spring perch and the bottom spring plate 30 mm. I did not have to relocate my antisway bar mounts or my shock mounts and the tie rod still clears the drag link by a comfortable margin.

I'm not sure what 35" MTRs 'actually' measure, but I have them under my FJ73 with a spring lift of ??? and a 2" Body Lift...

Front springs are the Old Man Emu Dakar Series, with all leaves in the packs still and no roof so less weight on the springs.

Clears the rears aswell, with 60 Series Springs fitted...

Soon fitting longer shackles, but also removing leaves from spring packs to free it up a little. I.e. My car scrapes at 2.2 Metres tall and Donuts are no worries of tipping... (Not trying to rub it in DumbDunce)...

Will see how it goes with the spring modded, and I might also measure up the spring reversal, before a shackle reversal, can anyone see any issues with this?

what about the driveshaft did use a spacer or was it enough

Also, in regards to re-drilling the spring perch... If I take leaves out, and use an extended shackle to hold it all in place, would it work similarly to a longer leaf spring setup?

It wont flop, at the moment. Take leaves out and it might, looking at shackles and 'another' locker by Saturday, if time permits, leaves too...
