LT230 came out in 5 speed RR. All 4 speeds are a one piece gearbox/transfer. they continued on in the disco's in both auto's and manuals

Some of the RR auto's (depending which one) had LT230 but not all of them did.

Low range is 3.32 no matter what it is out of, only the high range is different

you can get maxi drive low range gears (only change low range), they have 4.1's and I belive just brought out a lower (4.5 ?) version again. both require case grinding.

Ashcroft gears (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_48.html) have just released a full gearset (replaces all gears in the TC) with a low range of 5.95 and I believe there is no grinding of casing.

All t/flite, and 5spd 's were lt230, after market conversions using a b/w or ford auto used the cut down lt95, and also the zf auto models upto when the b/w viscous transfer came out.

Maxi drives new gear set is a 4.9 not 4.5. I have a set of these in my buggy. Dont be put off by the case grinding its easy to do with a 4" angle grinder.

yeah i wasn't sure..hence the ? on the new maxi set.

the grinding isn't a problem but it does take strength out of the case if too much has to be taken off (don't think maxi's are a probelm though)

No difference fitting gears to a lux t-case So what is one of these LT230
worth and what are the gears worth.

You can get a whole Rangie for under a grand if you look hard enough. Just make sure it has a torque flyte in it. Also look at 5 speed Countys.

I have seen a few of them go for about $300 in the past. The Maxi Drive 4.1 gearset was $1700 last time I asked, so I imagine the 4.9 set is the same or more.

Maxi drive low gears can't be fitted to early LT230's.

The LT230 must have taper roller bearing intermediate shaft - early models have needle roller bearings.

The correct models are easy to tell from the outside because they have a nut on the rear of the intermediate shaft to adjust the bearing pre-load.

The Ashcroft gears are 650 pounds and 96 pounds to to get them here to your door.

So thats around $1900 I'm estimating..

Had a quote from Dave Ashcroft. If we can get 5 sets together, 500 pounds each plus freight.

Worth trying to get a bulk buy.

If so let me know as I am trying to cut cost on the Crawler Unit (bolts to PTO output) as the gears dont interest me.
So far its just looking way to exxy to bring one in on my own  if i can save abit in both purchase price and shared freight I would be a much happier chappy :D

Don't forget the Customs man..

Maybe double that for duty, then add 10% to the whole lot..

I haven't looked for a while, maybe the 30% duty for cars 30 years & older still applies, I dunno.

How many pre 1975 LRs had an LT230??

Regards
Max P
