Post by frp88 »

So all you guys with comp trucks what is your line speed i would like to know to see how much faster you are

Since yours is a Toy PTO, which gear was that done in and RPM?

As then I will work my Nissan GQ PTO for same revs. As I cant use different gears like you.

I think the toy PTO's are 1:1, so if you were in 3rd gear (auto), assuming no slip in the converter, that would be 1800 shaft rpm on the pto; or 36rpm on the drum - they can be driven quite a bit quicker than that too. I set up a thomas PTO winch on a 70 series that could handle 3000rpm in 4th gear (manual), and the good thing about a pto is that it still makes its full 8000 pounds at that speed.

the down side that makes them less suitable for winching comps is that (a) if you overload them, you blow the shear pin, and you'll time out on the stage before you get it fixed, and (b) it's very hard to drive with the PTO engaged, meaning in most situations you're either winching or driving - to get a good time in a winch comp you need to do both at the same time

too up grade the pin is easy but then something down in the transfer could break  i was stuck in a mudhole once at springfield and it will lockup the converter i tell you it was hooking at that speed you dont need to drive i cant wait for MMM'S 8 day carnage at L/cruiser and see the comp guys and time them chris what does your winch do :?: or havent you ever timed it :?:

There is a clutch setup you can fit. Supposedly you can set it toa set load then when that is reached it just slips the clutch pack.Going to try and drop in there on sat morning and see what they can do.

man are you sure you would need a cross travel to spool the wire on and it would have to be the size off a 44gallon drum :D

the guys in borneo with the ridiculously fast winches can hold 500plus feet of cable and are using 16mm plasma rope and breaking it,mate of mine went over to navigate for one of the teams.

A mate is getting 55-58m per minute on a hydraulic powered 8274 mounted behind the cab of his GU ute. Compared to the 38-40m per minute he was getting from a H8 Superwinch, it now flies!!

is there a certain point you get to where you can have too much speed???

obviously those mud drags in borneo are a bit different, but for all the local winching events, and competitions, how fast do you reckon you could go before its just too quick???

To fast would be when you just snap your rope like lacker bands.

LudaCris

Tojo that is quick for a tirfor. Has it been moded.

for most people just four wheel driving for fun the slower the better (safer) I would think. No good winching your truck out at 30m/sec if it rolls on its side as it winches over a ledge.

for competitiuon work, there is no such thing as too fast.

well i'll see at the 8 day at l/cruiser and ask the guys i dont get why most guys try to mod the electric ones for comp when pto is low maintainence and cheap for a toyo anyway. When i saw the 8day last year i remember seeing sterlows double motor highmount and it did go much quicker and it cost a fair bit. I cant think off the gq with the hyd. but that was alot faster and i can remember on 2 stages were they were winching up and down 4 off the electric highmount were smoking i not trying to be smart a%$e maybe this year more guys will have done a mod to get away from highmount :D

PTO's are way more unreliable than other winches and if you brerak somthing in the gear box your out for the weekend unless you carry a spare box but if you burn a winch motor out you just replace and of you go.

LudaCris

P.s I still have a new 7.8Hp 12v 8274 winch motor for sale.

These "fast" winch speeds that have been quoted I assume are at freespool. What are they pulling under load and how much load can they pull?

most light vehicle PTO's (as you would put on a landcruiser or patrol) are rated around 8000 pounds, however this rating includes a considerable safety margin and with careful tuning of shear pins or clutches, they can be driven harder than that without damage. They are also well suited to using a pulley block - twice the pull and still the same speed if you just pick a higher gear or more engine rpm - a PTO is as fast under load as it is under no-load - the winch speed is controlled by engine speed(and in some cases eg toyota gear selection), and even in a high gear at high engine rpm they will make their full rated pull. the limiting factor for speed is usually the balance (or lack of) in the drive shaft(s) shaking the truck to bits, or simply running out of revs.
