GQ Timing Chain

Post by SiNH »

I took my truck to the local mechanic and asked for a quote to get the timing chain replaced since my truck has done 232,000km now.

The mechanic said he didnt want to do such a big job cause it requires the engine to be lifted. Is he just lazy or do you really have to llift the engine to replace the chain?

He said that because they use a chain and not a belt then the timing chain should last the lift of the engine.

Is he correct on both parts? I never owned anything with a timing chain before and with my cars it usually needs a belt change no more than 100,000kms.

What motor are you talking about - the 2.8? I thought even this motor was gear driven for the valvetrain. Or the RB30?

the 2.8 has a serpentine belt.. no chain.. and takes bout an hour to do the timing belt change.

rb30 also has a serpentine belt.. no chains as well.

no.. the motor doesnt have to come out for the 2.8.. but i cant see the RB30 being any different...

the radiator will have to come out thou as you'll need to get behind the harmonic balancer to undo the bolts holding the timing case on.

once the timing case is off.. line up the timing marks then change the belts and bolt everything back on.

It has a chain instead of a belt so you dont have to change it from what I understand. M y 89 Mav tb42 has done 260k and I wasnt in a hurry to touch the chain. If a belt lasts 100k a chain should last forever almost shouldn't it?

A mate told me that the only thing that can really go wrong is if the timing chain stretches. Does the TB42 have a known issue with this?

OK complete noob here, if it was gear driven what would this mean then?

Does it mean it should last the life of the engine?

Im planning on touring and with over 232,000km on the clock already I would want to replace timing belt/chain just to make sure thats all. I know I would if it was a normal car before a big trip.

forget about it mate the chain or gears will outlast the piston rings so dont worry about it till she starts puffing out blue smoke and needs a full rebuild

The TB42 is all Chain driven, i know i have looked at mine when i had the head replaced due to a crack.

The chain has its own tensioner unit inside so it will tighten if it loosens.

You will notice a rattle from the front of the motor under load if if chain is in bad condition, however, no one i know with TB42's have ever replaced their chains.
