Intercooled my 2.8 Ln60 4Runner
Hi, got a 2.8 (3L) in my 84 4Runner. 2inch spring lift, 2inch bodyblocks. Put a denco turbo kit with a switchzer turbo. 2 3/4 inch turbo back exhaust. 33 wrangler m/t's on 15x10 rims.
Just put on a r33 skyline intercooler, got one of the endtanks changed from a aluminium welder across from autobahn at slacks creek. Got some joiners and crap, and made up the pipe from the intake out of exhaust pipe.
Will tidy it up later. Putting the scoop on at the moment. then up the boost!!!
Saving for more articulation next

Aye Mate, did you notice much difference in power once you threw the intercooler on? any one know what would be a half decent I/cooler for a 12HT? A mate has a spare one off a 94 2.8 pajero but doubt she'd make a difference on the cruiser. what scoop ya runnin, one from Autobarn or off a Patrol, where is everyone gettin the ones off the GU's????? What was the total cost of the set up if u dont mind me askin? Bugger payin out ya @!$# for a Safari intercooler!!!
Thats a Top lookin 4Runner you got there, might see ya drivin round the slacks creek area. Love the Hilux badge on the intercooler . Looks Tops

Intercooler on 4runner
So far its cost:
$40 for intercooler
$40 to get it modified at welders
$20 for assorted plumbing
$40 for new cross over pipe
Couple hours labour after work
Scoop cost me $125 from nissan at marooka.
THe seal for under neath the scoop are more than the scoop them selves. So im just making my own seal
So should have it painted and installed for under $300. Pretty good compared to $1800. Mighted get as much power, but im sure it will do something.

although surely upping the boost above 10psi is bad for the 2.8?? OR does putting an i/c on allow you to up the boost and cause less stress than without one?? i'm confused..
yeah, becuase of the intercooler making the incoming air colder, you can theoritically upp the boost, and it will be safer than having high boost (ie, one bar) without an I/C
indubitably
be very very careful when fitting a top mount intercooler. once you get your scoop on, put some string 'telltales' around the scoop mouth and observe the airflow at various road speeds. there is a strong possibility that at some (possibly all!) speeds, your airflow will be reversed, and hot air from the engine bay will flow UP through the intercooler and out the bonnet scoop, heating your inlet charge air - you may find that it is necessary to fit a fan above or below the intercooler to maintain correct airflow. Also before you fiddle with boost and fuelling, fit an exhaust pyro gauge and work in small increments to maintain a safe exhaust temp. As a final note, the bottom end of the 3L is not known for its strength and indirect injected diesels do not deal well with high boost, so even with a good intercooler there is a highly diminished return for boost levels over about 10psi - you waste a lot of energy squeezing all that air in and out of the precombustion chamber orifice, which generates a lot of heat in the head, and a lot of stress in the rods/big end bearings. If you want the engine to last, do not exceed about 12psi, and keep an exhaust pyro fitted permanently.
hope that helps you on your quest for buckets of power!
cheers

welcome to the family of intercooled lux's , De=lux my mate has just slapped a turbo kit on his 2.8 by the Chapmens crew at cooroy and it tuns 15psi without i/c, a bit scary but moves produces 94.8kw and another mate with 31's get 100.6 kw, these are all 3L donks..

4runner 2.8 turbo intercooler
Tested the intercooler yesterday night and all today. Had no dramas with any of the pipe work. I still need to brace the intercooler to the engine.
There was a definate power increase!!!! Revs bit easier and top end pickup was the most noticeable.
Just have to weld in a fitting for my boost gauge to check the boost.
If any one knows how much or where i can get a pyrometer gauge, that would be tops. I'll have some more pics of the scoop and intercooler soon.

You can get a Jaycar kit for the pyro gauge cheap, just have to get a probe made. Pyrosales at Salisbru quoted me roughly $70 to custom make a probe to suit my needs or to modify a bolt in the dump pipe to suit. Otherwise Sgesco (?) near the Archerfield airport sell a vdo pyro kit for somewhere around the $300 mark or their own brand but just sightly different for around 2-250 ish.
of course a bleed valve will work, but a boost controller (electronic or mechanical) is better. you can also change the spacing between the wastegate actuator and the wastegate by shortening the pushrod or sometimes by puttong some washers between the actuator bracket and the mounting face.roberts wrote:how will you turn up the boost

iv got a safari kit and front mount safari intercooler running 11psi with a 2.5" exhurst cant work out how to turn up the boost on a desiel

Re: 4runner 2.8 turbo intercooler
I got mine (autometer) from the states www.egauges.com it was $380 to my door, but i also got an oil pressure gauge as well so it will be a bit less than that.boogdude wrote:If any one knows how much or where i can get a pyrometer gauge, that would be tops. Re: Intercooled my 2.8 Ln60 4Runner
I have been told this is a bad idea because when the pipe rusts the particals of rust end up in the motor and do a bit of damage.boogdude wrote:made up the pipe from the intake out of exhaust pipe.
Apparently its better to use alloy or Stainless.

I also run one of these datsun scoops on my cruiser. It's the only part of the whole set up I don't like.
The I/C makes a difference. My cruise runs up to 18psi but I try to keep it below 12 by lifting the right foot when she gets to high. I want to adjust the wastegate so she only goes to 12psi max and adjust the fuel pump to suit. Hopefully I will get a little better fuel economy as well. I currently get 16lts per hundred fully loaded towing a off road camper. With the cost of fuel these days I need all the help I can get.
My Cruiser is Environmentally Friendly.

Do you mean Landcruiser Is it a 2H engine or 12h-t engine, 18 psi is obsurd, you'll blow it up. I've got 12h-t factory turbo (60 series) and wouldn't do that. My 5 tonne Isuzu 8.5 litre truck does 19psi. Holly smoke Batman even if it is a 100 series
Hi mate just wondering where you got your bar from ive been trying for months and arb tjm ect cant sell me a bar i see yours is a arb maybe you can inform me of the part number for it

so you have tryed a bleed valve, i think not trust me it dosent change a thing i have one sitting in my lux now dosent do shitdumbdunce wrote:of course a bleed valve will work, but a boost controller (electronic or mechanical) is better. you can also change the spacing between the wastegate actuator and the wastegate by shortening the pushrod or sometimes by puttong some washers between the actuator bracket and the mounting face.roberts wrote:how will you turn up the boost

It makes no difference what kind of motor you install a bleed valve to, it always works for controlling boost. it is crude but effeective. Is your turbo too small? have you adjusted your bleed valve? have you installed your bleed valve correctly? have you adjusted your fuelling to compensate for the extra boost air? you can't blame the bleeder valve for not getting your boost up, it is only part of the system, and when you adjust one part of the system, the other parts need to tuned to compensate.roberts wrote:so you have tryed a bleed valve, i think not trust me it dosent change a thing i have one sitting in my lux now dosent do shitdumbdunce wrote:of course a bleed valve will work, but a boost controller (electronic or mechanical) is better. you can also change the spacing between the wastegate actuator and the wastegate by shortening the pushrod or sometimes by puttong some washers between the actuator bracket and the mounting face.roberts wrote:how will you turn up the boost

intercooler for sale soon!!
I have had the intercooler on now for a few months and works great. Have a little 8 inch davies craig thermo on top which helped heaps.
I have recently purchased a water to air intercooler setup, and will hopefully have it on in a fortnight. If anyone in interested in the top mount with some of the piping.
Let me know and i will hold it asside. If i don't get any real offers, it will be going on ebay.
Will have the pics of the water to air setup to put on the website for others.
cheers
