no starter... sometimes..

Post by shorty_f0rty »

hey y'all..

i have just noticed a problem in the last few days of driving.. the issue is that sometimes when you go to start.. nothing happens.. nothing at all. no clicks, no whirls no cranking! the way I have been fixing this is sticking my head under the bonnet and fiddling with the cables running off the cranking battery.. and try to crank it again.. and it usually works..

ie,.. starts fine leaving home for the boozer, after the boozer starts fine, after collectin the mail its stuffed, after a fiddle with the wires it starts..

All the Acc's and lights and glow plugs work as normal..and even starts up no problem sometimes.. its just wierd that it happens very intermittently..

I had a bit of a look last night and couldn't see anything obvious (pinched wires, loose connections, sparks, etc.. ) and had a look at the starter and couldn't find anything that would indicate an issue.

The cables i fiddle with have been traced back by sight and appear to be ok as far as I can tell.. The battery is getting charge and the alternator has everything hooked up..

I was thinking it could be a wire or something connecting the starter motor, but from what I can see it all looks good.. If it was a sensor, this wouldn't allow me to start regardless of fiddling with the wires wouldn't it?

anyway.. any suggestions would be appreciated...

Thanks!

oh yeah.. this is on a 3B Diesel 1984 BJ42 Landcruiser!

check the connections, visually and by hand feeling for loose wires between the battery and starter + starter solenoid. Also ensure your starter has a good earth. From your description it sounds like a loose wire if it fixes it after you fiddle around with the wires.

this is exactly what my 2f powered 40 was doing, and i narrowed it down to a bad connection SOMEWHERE between the key switch and the solenoid.

i couldn't trace it so i wired up a button.

This problem is spreading. I had the same prob. Seems fixed for now. Gave it a washdown and gave the wire connections around the solinoid a clean.

cheers

Another one...
Had this a couple of weeks ago. Tried to start it with a hot wire directly on the solenoid, and it started in an instant. Try tracing the wire running to the solenoid and/or starter relais and connection terminals. I ended up waterproofing connections on the the immobilisator which caught water through a rusthole in the bulkhead.. Since then it never happened again.

yesterday i had to do this every time i started.. the last time i did it .. i noticed a bunch of wires going into one solid bunch (and then into the cab i assume).. I noticed what looked like a fusable link and just touched this (pushed it further into the join) .. and tried to start.. this seemed to fix it.. .. i'llhave to look closer at this in the future though..
