A friend of mine has a 2001 twincab hilux which is stock, he want's to put 33" bfg muddies on but doesn't know what kind of mods he needs to make to fit that size tyre.

Any idea's would be a great help.

33s are actually illegal on a hilux, legal max is 31s. go figure.

I cant get my 33s legal thru an engineer, so technically ur insurance (if u got any) can knock u back.

If its an IFS front, all u can do is fit a skyjacker lift system ($$$) or wind the torsion bars up till u get clearance (mine still rub on the back of the guards on mid lock, going up driveways usually or a little off road) u cant wind up too far as the downtravel gets limited, and unless u jack up the back springs, the truck will be fron high if the torsions are too high.

Also depends on model and tyre size. If u got a dual cab SR5 with factory flares and mudguards, u may need to remove mudflaps and trim the flares, or remove completely. If u go for 33s x 10.5 (mine) ull have probs like above, if u go 33sx12.5 u will have much more clearance probs.

If u got live axle, u havent got a problem, except street legal. new springs to get max height will set u right.

You can fit 33`s stock just got to trim the inner part of the guards

I just bought a 2003 hilux with ifs, i want 33" and what you need to do is a 2" body lift and aftermarket torsion bars, don't put simex tyres on cos it will damage your diff believe happen to a mate of mine.

What i am doing now is a SAS conversion & 2" body lift and 3" suspension lift which altogether costing me $5,500. Where if i did a 2" body lift and aftermarket torsion bars would cost me $3,500.

I total agree with you 4sum4 why when i get change to solid axle swap and get more wheel travel, i know one bloke who has had done with the company thats doing mine and his is over the moon over the job and he never regrets it

do u supply any of the bits, or is it a total supply and install job?

$3500 for a bodylift and some torsion bars? they certainly saw you coming champ.

To fit 33's you will need a 2'' body lift and then wind the stock t bars up 1 1/2''. This will give you enough clearance to run 33's and also doesnt eliminate all your travel in the IFS. I run 33x12.5 mickey thompson claws on my lax, before that x terrains. never had a prolems, never broken ne thing.

Opposite Lock they are using ORI stuff and no i don't supply anything and is costing me $5,500 with new suspension all round

whoops sorry they are not normal torsion bars special ones that can be wind up to 2.5" lift

whoops sorry they are not normal torsion bars special ones that can be wind up to 2.5" lift
once again they are having you on champ. You can wind the stock torsion bars as high as any heavy duty torsion bar. But with 2 1/2 inchs you will be close to the bumpstops. Thats why i said only wind them 1 1/2 '', so that retain some travel. Heavy duty t/bars will give u a stiffer ride and less flex.

i agree with greenhilux - i have a hilux with a 2" body lift and a 2" suspension lift 1500$ for suspension (ARB) and 700$ for body lift.

this truck runs 33x12.5 BFG muds with no scrubbing - 15x8 rim, neg21mm offset.

nah seriously though, SAS means Solid Axle Swap. This is a common operation done by people with Indeendant Front Suspension type trucks who want the added flex that a solid axle will give. :cool:
