22R still clicking

22R still clicking
i posted a while ago with this problem , and no avail was made of it.
my 22R will start fine and run quiet while it is cold, when its starts getting warmer, it will start a clicking noise coming from the the extracters side of the block.
the noise will happen while in the rev range between 800-shift
*exhaust manifold gasket changed twice - not that
*not timing chain, too random - not that
*not a tappet, too random - not that
it is coming from the front of the block more than anything,
*Possible whole in extracters? i heard they will make a clicking type sound if they have a whole
*The dizzy counter balance came off a while back, this was fixed by the mechanic, possibility that has come loose again????
it is an 85 LJ70 with a 22R
any ideas people???

If its a ticking type noise i would moe than likely say its one of the tappets..
even if its intermittent..
My triton ute did this.. did it for at least 12 months never got round to fixing it till one day it jammed open or something dropped the valve and BANGO.... stuffed the engine.... a nice hole in the piston and a valve that wasnt anywhere near where it should of been...

I'd start by winding the valve clearances down to 50% of the specification in the manual. timing chains are known to be noisy on high km engines, if you let them go too long they can chainsaw through the side of the timing case. pull off all the belts are run the engine witout them; the sound could be in an idler bearing or the water pump or alternator.

thanks dumbdance, is winding the valve clerances down that much going to have a massive loss of power???

nope, actually the opposite - smaller valve clearances means more valve duration and overlap so you might lose a tiny amount of bottom end torque but it will breath a little bit better higher up in the rev range. thanks brain, you have been most helpful, i can't be stuffed screwing around with the hub seals, so i am getting it done next wednesday, mate works over the road so hes gunna pull the rocker cover off and do me tappets, as me mate will do em twenty times faster than me.

Like Ddunce said - i had similar ticking then changed one day to random scream then whiring like two pieces of flat steel being rubbed over each other.
Was bearings in alternator but sounded it was coming form the rear of the extractors. pull of fbelts and run engine for a small amount of time.

belts came off yesty, and it still happens so it ain't a alt bearing or nething.
more i listen to it the more it sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine. i havn't done the tappets yet, i explained all the symtoms to a mechanic and he also said timing chain, thinks one of the guides or retainers or something has come loose???
so the probability of timing chain needed to be done, as it is getting worse and worse. its a said day for greggy

juts pulled the rocker cover off to d the tappets, the timing chain has about 10mm of slack/freeplay in it on further inspection, chain dampener no. 1 has been broken.
I just went up to the liabary then and borrowed the manual for the 22r and it doesn't seem like it is going to be to bad to replace, i am just hoping that the head gasket doesn't break off the head when the front of the engine is removed.
any other things i need to look out for when doing it?
