cutom handbrake question

Post by Vulcanised »

As some may or may not be aware..... i'm doing a SAS and coils conversion on my Rodeo..... i have all the stuff(almost) and i'm going to get started in a couple of weeks time....... the problem i currently have is that the GQ has the handbrake at the rear of the gearbox, and the Deo on the back drums........ i can get a disc machined up at work easy enough.... and i thought about sourcing a rear disc caliper off an early Commonwhore, or somethjing similar that has the mechanical operating handbrake on the disc, instead of the drum type of handbrake on later disc brakes (make sense?) i'm after a bit of help/advice on setting it up if anybody has done a custom tailshaft handbrake.

There are some guys in the US and UK who have done disc conversions to rover handbrakes (same place as the nissan). Generally they don't work as well as a drum and are hard to get setup right (drums pull the shoes on tighter when you work the handbrake - discs dont so need more force). Do a search in the rover section of pirate, and the international section of the landroverenthusiast forum.

EDIT - have a read here

hey roedao
i'm currently in a similar position to you. i'm doing a disc brake conversion on my lux.

parts i'll be using

GQ rear rotors ($60 for the pair on ebay)
early model subaru front disc calipers ($6 for the pair on ebay)
and some booty fab mounts. (about $20 in steel)

the subbie calipers for the front have the park brake built in already so i'm planning on modifying my existing brake cable set-up to mate up with the arms on the calipers. i'll post pics when i start.

cheers joel

sometimes it can be just as easy as asking your local auto parts place....... i was in Scone Spares today buying some driving lights to mount on my roll bar....... and i asked the guy if he knew of any manufacturers of mechanical disk brakes............ in about 30 seconds he found one and had a price for me :D $140.... and it takes Commodore disc pads....... they are made for trailers, and will work perfectly  so i have it on order. I'll post pics when it arrives.
