tongue stuck in a hole
the tow bar tongue on my toyota tow bar is stuck firm in it`s hole(rusted). I`ve sprayed it in wd40 for 3 weeks and have belted the sh#t out of it with sledge hammer but it won`t budge. Tryed to remove hole tow bar this morning so i could heat it but bolts are going to snap off or snap captive nut off inside chassis. anyone got an idea ho to remove tongue from bar.?
brother inlaws sugestion: chain to tree and drive off real fast. no thanks

YEAH! Lucky it wasn't in General Chit Chat!!!blkmav wrote:And I thought this thread was going to be about something else
anyways, yeah the idea of a heavy trailer should vibrate the toungue after a good drive over some speed hump or corrugations, and hopefully it will then easily come out.
Shut Up, Get Out, & Start Digging...
well just spent an hour with truck chained to tree in low range 1st floging the hell out of tongue with BFH with no luck. looks like I`ll have to find an oxyBarney7779 wrote:Ca try the chain to a tree idea but dont drive off quick, just take up the weight on the chain and the get someone to bash again with BFH and the shock of hitting it with the weight of the car pulling on it may get it to move
Good luck
(and a new clutch)
Back your Rig up a hill to a tree. Place tree protector around tree and attach to tongue. Release hand brake with Rig in neutral. Park mother inlaws car sideways infront of your Rig. Leave over night.
Id go the Brother inlaws idear. But start off slow and build up speed with each new atemped.

from info, two ways 1st, is that if the 32mm nut under the ball is rusted on, ANGLE GRINDER WITH CUT OFF DISK (@ the nut side), and keep bashing, if you got the nut off but the ball and thred is stuck in the hole in the tounge, ANGLE GRINDER WITH CUT OFF DISK (@the ball side), then center punch and drill ya self a new hole..

Is the tongue really worth keeping if it's rusted to a Toyotachook05 wrote:well just spent an hour with truck chained to tree in low range 1st floging the hell out of tongue with BFH with no luck. looks like I`ll have to find an oxyBarney7779 wrote:Ca try the chain to a tree idea but dont drive off quick, just take up the weight on the chain and the get someone to bash again with BFH and the shock of hitting it with the weight of the car pulling on it may get it to move

one way that might work, heat it (towbar) with an oxy until it's just glowing cherry red.... then qucnh it with a hose.... this causes the outer part to shronk fast and crush the rust underneath.... works on getting rusted nuts off bolts....... i don't know what it would do to the temper of the towbar though.

Thanks for all the CONSTRUCTIVE comments. reason I need to remove hitch is to change it to tow my off road camper. It is also on a 100 series wagon and is a real pain in the shins. also being on a wagon I`m not to keen on the chain at speed idea (tailgate/glass). It`s not a totaly rusted towbar but tongue is siezed from not being removed for 6 years. (my have backed a bit far down the boatramp on one occasion.) as for removing towbar as I said the captive nuts are going to shap off inside chassis turning a simple job into a full days job.(not the first time)
I`ll try some of that spray stuff some off you recomended.

Sorry, the opening was just too good, I couldn't resist, it was meant in friendly humour, I would seriously help you if I could, I got my stuck tongue out by putting the towbar in the vice then bashing with the lump hammer, it's not going to help you though and it wasn't that badly stuck.chook05 wrote:Thanks for all the CONSTRUCTIVE comments. reason I need to remove hitch is to change it to tow my off road camper. If you're worried about it flying off and doing damage with the tree/chain/hammer approach, you might be able to reduce the risk of that by using a second, short chain welded or bolted to the tongue, that will keep it from flying into anythign valuable.
Good luck. Let us know what you break!

This is not legal advice.
not worried about tongue flying of but chain braking and going through tailgate.chimpboy wrote:If you're worried about it flying off and doing damage with the tree/chain/hammer approach, you might be able to reduce the risk of that by using a second, short chain welded or bolted to the tongue, that will keep it from flying into anythign valuable.
