Gday
I am trying to make a snorkel and was wondering if you can just attach a air intake hose straight to the standard oval air cleaner housing (once sealed) or should i make another air cleaner box. what else should be done to the engine to make it waterproof such as the dizzy, alt, plugs.
thanks fellas.
any pics would be a great help.

snorkel fitting and waterproofing

snorkel
i welded a 90degree 3'bend to a standard rangie air filter housing(muffler type) and put flexible reinforced tubing from there to the snorkel, you may want to put some silicone on the joins.with the dizzy i've found electronic ignition is more capable of handling moisture than the original points,i've run an airline to mine and siliconed the cap on.it runs fine through deep water crossings over the bonnet, even better would be to run about 2psi into the dizzy.
Re: snorkel
I have heard of this to be quite effective. Would love to see some setups?THE 109 wrote:i welded a 90degree 3'bend to a standard rangie air filter housing(muffler type) and put flexible reinforced tubing from there to the snorkel, you may want to put some silicone on the joins.with the dizzy i've found electronic ignition is more capable of handling moisture than the original points,i've run an airline to mine and siliconed the cap on.it runs fine through deep water crossings over the bonnet, even better would be to run about 2psi into the dizzy.
Re: snorkel fitting and waterproofing
Something i noticed recently was that a stage 1 series 3 V8 uses a tube sort of T piece in place of the muffler type filter housing which could then be attached to hose and a filter box of some kind.ranover wrote:Gday

I have heard of using a small air horn compressor to pump air into the dizzy to pressurise it.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
