105 series conversion help needed
At last it seems as if I am getting somewhere. I am in need of some sound technical advice. I own a 105 series TLC 4.2 diesel. The vehicle is registered as a 1999 model but was manufactured in 1998. At the moment it is powered by the tried and trusted 1HZ engine. I would like to swap the engine with either the 1HDT or preferably the 1HDFT as I have access to both. I have spoken to quite a few companies and individuals and seem to be getting conflicting advice. I don’t want to sell my vehicle in order to upgrade to a so-called VX model as I love my manual transmition, 3x difloccks and awd.All I need is a bit more power and possibly slightly better consumption. My 1st question is whether this conversion is possible and 2nd which engine to use as I can get both engines for the same price? I would really appreciate your input and advice. THANKS. I agree. a 1HZ with aftermarket turbo is more driveable and more powerful than a (unmodified) 1HD-T or 1HD-FT (approx 130kW, 115kW, 124kW respectively) and the difference in fuel consumption is negligible. It is far cheaper and reliability does not suffer so long as you don't go overboard with the boost (9psi without intercooling will yield over 130kW, 12psi with intercooling is over 140kW, approaching the power and torque of current spec 1HD-FTE engines)Chucky wrote:Why not put a aftermarket turbo intercooler setup on your exsisting diesel?
You'll get more power than out of a standard setup, And driven the same I find the diferance in fuel consumption to me minor.

If aftermarket turbo kits are not available in RSA, there are a number of manufacturers in Australia who will ship a kit to you, AXT, Denco, APS all have turbo and intercooler kits to suit your application.

Why did toyota not fit the turbo diesels to the 105? was something to do with clearence issues with the turbo diesel engine. This is something you shouyld look at before going any further, no point putting one in if it dont fit
An aftermarket turbo on your 1HZ would be the cheapest option, but nowhere near the best. A mate of mine has a turbo'd 1HZ in his 105 and he was not very impressed with the results. My brothers 1HDFET drives much nicer and feels like it has more power.

Thanks .I did consider fitting a Turbo system but I do have some reservations. In RSA we have 2 or 3 companies that offer this type of service but even they are now reluctant to do it. In the past this type of conversion has almost always led to the motor being blown after 40 000kms. The most popular excuse here is that the head of the 1HZ is to “thinâ€

I know of a guy in oz who has transplanted a hdft (the better of the two turbo diesels) into his hj105...it was an almost straight fit.... and this motor doesnt need glow systems at all to start...he got the motor from an 80 series and used the gearbox aswell as the transfer...because the 80 box is indestructable where as the hj105 uses a smaller r series box and usually spits out 3rd gear after turbos have been added.
The turbo motor has a larger clutch aswell, and you can boost it up if you add an intercooler to make much more power than a similar 1hz....being directly injected, there is less thermal loss, hence more power and better economy.
This will cost alot more than a turbo on the 1hz, but if you intend playing with the factory turbo motor to add performance, you will get a better result.
