GQ PTO Help

Post by DieselBoy »

Im desperate to get my hands on any info that you lot may have on the Nissan PTO unit and winch.

I have one on my vehicle, but other than how to make it winch me out trouble i know nothing about it.

Does anyone have any parts diagrams or sections in manuals that they can scan and email or post here, or even personal opinions, thoughts or hearsay would do as a starter!!

Cheers,
Pete.

Pete,
I've got a couple of PTO units and have used and abused them for a fair while on our old race truck. Have no manuals or written info......only what we've learned through experience.

What is it you want to know?

Cheers

Yep Turps does has have a PTO winch on a SWB GQ.
Mine is a 8000lb Thomas winch, using the Nissan PTO.
Rlaxton will be able to give you the amount of power you can get out of a PTO as I cant remember.

The GQ PTO is mounted on the front of the gear box and uses its on small gearbox. For forwards and reverse gears. Unlike a MK or Toy/rover setup which mount of the transfer case and can be winched in 1st to 5th, high and low range.
If it is an after market fitment like mine is. They will us the Nissan PTO. But the engagment leaver may be different to the factory. Mine uses a T handle on the dash just to the left of the steering wheel.
The factory setup is a control box mount on the transmission tunnel next to the gear stick on the drivers side.
It is possible to winch and drive and I do it quite often.

To use winch-
set cable up for pull
engage drum on winch
clutch in, then engage winch in on PTO (extra lever or handle to pull)
ease foot of clutch and winch will wind in untill you put foot on clutch or turn engine off.
winding out is the same but just engage winch control to wind out.

To winch and drive, which is not reccomended by any winch maker that I know of.
just select 1st gear lowrange and ease foot of clutch. Would be much better if you had rokhopper or gearmaster gears in transfer case. As the line speed is alot slower than std low 1st.

Any more questions ask away.
The Kiwi boys will have had more experience with factory setups as they have been getting them since about 89.

I guess I should chip in since Turps asked me too :-)

I have heard that the PTO is rated for 12Hp but then again, the same company that said that was running an hydraulic pump off a standard Nissan PTO in reverse (the ratios are 119% in forward, 153% in reverse) and from memory they were getting more than 60L/min at 1800psi which is 18hp or more... Who knows for sure? Whatever it is, it is a lot more than a typical electric winch motor.

Cheers for that every one.

I'm going to fire synthetic cable on it, so the lbs/tonnes rating of the shear pins would be handy so i can get the correct strength rope.

Is the end with the drum with the freewheel hub bushed or bearinged??

What sort of oil is recommended?, i'm running a 90w Fully synthetic Hypoid gear oil with the level plug rotated 180 degrees.

Are the UJ's on the shaft serviceable, can greese nipples be put on??

Whats inside the hanger for the shaft near the engine mount?? Bearings??

You answered the Q about driving and winching, cheers. I do it too.

Now just a general Winching technique question:

I have big issues with the cable laying on the drum correctly when winching. It goes all over the show, i end up winching for a few seconds, then re laying the cable, then a bit more then relay the cable. Its a PIA!!

I have 58m crammed on there!!

I think i'm not winding the cable on the drum tight enough when i put the cable on there, so thats why the cable slips down between windes during winching.
Can any one recommend a creative way to initially put the cable on the drum under good tension??

I usually free spool the cable out to what ever i;m going to attach the cable to, then lock the drum in and winde up the slack, then start winching.
Should i be winding the cable out on the PTO under tension rather than just letting it free spool out??

So many bloody questions!!!!!

I think that you are running the wrong oil. From other reading the Nissan PTO winch is supposed to run in some 600 weight steam oil. Other oils are not compatible with the bronze bushes or something. Do a search on this site. There are a few threads about that.

With feeding the cable onto the drum.
Before I go out when I know I am likly to use the winch I re-feed the cable on. Useually just freespool it. Once it is all nearly out or to a point where I get down to a nice layer. I just lock the drum and winch in with my foot on the brake and load the bugger up (can use hand brake to). While winching in just pick a target just to the right of you winch point and try and line yourself up with that while winch in. And with a bit of load it should wind on pretty even.
If winching and driving. I really on do that to help it along abit. So when the wheels get traction I either disconnect teh winch and drive it or stop driving and just winch so I dont birds nest the drum.

As for running rope instead of cable. They are warm drive, so there is no brake so no real big heat problems. THey do get warm though, just not hot.
