High kilometers for Nissan 4.2 diesel

Post by Zulu »

Hallo EVERYONE, I am new to the forum looking at buying a 1990 Nissan 4.2diesel Patrol It has 380 000km on the clock. The vehicle is very neat I am just not sure if I might have serious maintenance/repair cost 2 to 3 years from now. According to the current owner the previous owner had the engine overhauled on 160 000 he does not know for what reason. It is not turbo charged. What should one look out for.

alot of guys have gotton well over 500 000km before doing anything to them. Mine has 476000km on it now and will hopefully have a turbo soon.

If you wanna read up about things to check for. There is a good right up at www.gqpatrol.com
It lists almost anything that could go wrong with a Patrol that would be worth checking. Even beaten up old trucks dont suffer from all the listed problems though.

They're a great truck mine has got 470,000k's on it and has only had a set of injectors done and they weren't even really required. If they've got a service history thats a start at least you would know its had regular oil changes etc, if they've had that then they'll go forever. the drive train is very tuff. IKne is an 89 model and hasn't got any rust in the body yet. They are known to get rust in the rear window frames though, but they're supposed to be easy to change.

I rebuilt my TD42 at 550,000km's and it would easily have gone another 100,000. Regular oil changes/filter and the right oil are the way to go to acheive high km's. Things to check for on high km engines are: Excessive tappet noise which could be worn valve rockers, water leaks where aluminium front cover mates to the engine, and oil leaks from the back of the Alternator. noisy water pump. Other than that, the TD42 will give excellent long lasting service. The TD42 needs an old fashioned high detergent oil--ie Shell Rimula X or Castrol JMAX
