80 series... more powa!
hey everyone.
few questions.
i bought a '94 model 80 series GXL 4.5L petrol, about 2 months ago.
so far its got:
twin lockers, lift + shocks, 35 inch coopers, part time 4wd, dual batt's, uhf etc.
it goes pretty well. but just looking at releasing a few more ponies.
got a price on lukey extractors and lukey 2.5 inch exhaust. but it doesnt come with the middle section??? has anyone else had this too? exhaust places book says middle section "not servicable". do i need to put a cat in?
next. was thinking of putting EF falcon twin thermos on. any thoughts/personal opinions?
and finally, advancing the timing. i know how to do it with the paper clip and T1 to TE1 terminals. just wondering if anyone has done this and if it was worthwhile.
thanks for your time.

If I was you and had enough money to play with ide put a Safari Intercooled Turbo job on it and a performance chip!!!!!!!!!!!
the Turbo takes it up from
Power = 158Kw(stock) - 240Kw (Turbo'd)
Torque = 373Nm (Stock) - 550Nm(Turbo'd)
0-100 = 15.0 Sec(Stock) - 7.5 Sec(Turbo'd)
If I had a petrol cruiser and had money to burn HELL YEAH would i do this!!!! all it would need is 2 sets of rims, 22" Chromies for the city, (another set to go 4 wheelin) all the fancy blue lights, big sound system, blow off valve And my friend "Oh What A Feeling" it would be to show those ricer's what a real mans car can do!!!!!! Talk about enjoying the best of both worlds!!!! HaHaHaHA
Will find the web-site for ya.
They claim it doesnt cause any engine harm, i.e high running temperature and shite.
Just My $0.02 worth

Never had my needles over that way that far....but the turbo sure changes the way a 80 moves....i mean...what caravan???? oh thats right, i put it on earlier....essentially, its like driving a v8 ute but its a cruiser.
Pity Safari wont sell you one anymore, unless you wear a white robe and buy 25 of the kits at once.....

that's true, but surely they have an obligation to supply spare parts to their existing customers in Australia - so you could, for example, purchase a couple of spare manifolds, a couple of spare turbos, a couple of spare injection units and piggyback computers, a couple of spare oil and water lines, etc etc.dow50r wrote:Troy

and you could haggle for a good deal because you're buying in bulk!
(if you want a cruiser that is easy and relatively cheap to squeeze more power out of, start with a turbo diesel, intercool it and fit an aftermarket turbo. it will not make as many horsepower as the petrol but the torque will be higher, and torque is what you feel. who needs to drive at 200km/h?)
Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
Not really, I tried getting a new i/c core and they just won't seperate kits. You have to buy the whole kit they tell me. They also slog you for individual parts for things like a snorkel inner guard tube $180, got it for $28 somewhere else.dumbdunce wrote:

should I swim it first ?
should I swim it first ?
I have heard there is a garret specially manufactured with the CT26 flange etc to bolt in, or a number of shops (APS, Denco) sell a CT26 with garret internals that yields better power and economy at the same boost, with lower rpm spool up and potential for higher boost. These are fairly expensive options.adrian wrote:what aftermarket turbo would you go for on a 1hd-ft ???

so the cheapest way is, to pull my 1fz out and put a 1hz in?dumbdunce wrote:(if you want a cruiser that is easy and relatively cheap to squeeze more power out of, start with a turbo diesel, intercool it and fit an aftermarket turbo. it will not make as many horsepower as the petrol but the torque will be higher, and torque is what you feel. who needs to drive at 200km/h?)
i bought some falcon thermos today, for $85, took about 2.5hrs to fit. fits in great. havent driven it yet tho. (having a break)
was mainly looking at why there is no middle section in the extractors/exhaust. if anyone else has had this drama and how they got around it?
and is there a bigger AFM for the 1FZ?
Thanks

ne decent muffler place would be able to make up a 2.5" section to fit it and install a hiflow cat etc

Hi
I suggest you do these things....
Have the 2 into 1 exhaust joint below the motor cut out and a descent one fitted, also while there, take off the round muffler and fit a just as long free flow muffler like a turbo muffler. leave the other 2 alone they are both straight through.
Advance the timing to 5 deg and run premium unleaded...hurts the pocket but watch it go furthwer on it...
Thats about it...unichip will help if it is 95 or later.... but costs 1400 dollars, a set of lower diff gears will help get it going too -)

HaHa, I for one wouldnt wanna be in an 80series doing over 200km/h im guessing the pic just demonstrates that the turbo wont cause the car to cook for example even when driven hard. You may not get a safari set up for a 4.5L but at least it shows what can be done with them, i mean im sure you could find some1 in Aus who could do just as gooder job. well thats one major mod that would have improved results, it was only an idea, i know a bit far fetched but still its an idea. Though im sure there are heaps of ways to get the beast performing.

See rotormaster in Cambellfield - they have roller bearing turbo's to suit for around $2k - then get a manifold made up - (another $800) and then get the exhaust done and some tuning maybe at JPC? Turbo good for upto 400kw just depends on the engine.
Ultimately if you want it done - then it will be for a price... Intercooler - just go find a XR6 stock one (dudes have those coming ot everywhere as they go **BLING**) for bugger all and then hang on!!!

have already done alot of reseach on turbo'ing it. its not cheap.
that pic is from APS website. (have drooled over it for hours ) pretty sure the safari kit retailed for ~$12000.
www.airpowersystems.com.au
been to JPC got a quote. bolt on 4PSI, and intercool it, he says easy 180rwkw. spend double and do it properly (strip down/rebuild) easy over 250rwkw. but the price was close to what the whole car is worth. cheaper than the safari kit tho.
its pretty torque'y as it is, but i've got a boat and just wanted a little bit more power to hold speed up hills.
dow50r: i run on the new shell 95. found it goes better and further than on optimax and normal unleaded.
id just replace the entire exhaust if i spent any money on it.
what differences in engine management are there between '94 and '95?
will the '95 or later Air Flow Meter fit on my 94?
are they still a square to round AFM?
and why wont a unichip help a '94 model?
thanks

Unichip will help up in the high revs.....the 94 has an o2 meter and is always running optimal mixture, so cant ge better than that...the 95 and later doesnt so there is scope for improvement. Later air mass meter can be put on but the whole puter and wiring needs to come with it.
Manifolds for sale at turboglide for 750 dollars for a turbo, then you have to get the turbo, exhaust, piping, and control...lots of mucking round.....do as i did and wait for a second hander to come up in the trading post....or there is two turbo cruisers that i know of for sale, one in this forumn 4 sales. the other in Brissy t/p. ask if they will part with the kit ....might get a yes off them.
