Timing Belt Light

A friend came to me this morning, his timing belt light came on in a 2.4l diesel hilux with 440k's on the clock. Wondering if someone has missed changing the belt at some point? As the motor gets older it needs to be done more regularly? What causes the light to come on is the belt stretching? And finaly how long does he have until it will cost a lot of money???

the light is essentiually a timer and goes off every 100 thousand.

It does not indicate the condition of the belt in anyway. THe light will still be on with a BRAND new belt or even BRAND new motor if you donot reset the counter.

The light is telling your mate 100thousand k's has passed since someone last reset the counter, and the light is reset generally when the belt is replaced. (some people just press it and keep driving. These people are dicks).

So his timing belt has probably done 100thou and is time to be replaced.

I would say you could pribably stretch another 20thousand out of a belt, butrealy, you could get another 100thousand, or you could only get another 2000 before the belt breaks slamming your pistons into your valves possibly destroying your entire engine. (some engines the pistons will not hit the valves so damage is minimal, but still a pitta)

Advice : Get it changed in the next couple weeks.

must be different with 2000 3lt diesel hilux,i was told to unplug it as there is no way of turning it off.

newer ones may require an electronic reset by interfacing with the computer. not sure on that myself. but most older toyotas you remove the rubber grommet in the speedo section, and stick a small round tool like about 3mm in press the button and it resets it.

yhats what a yota rep said but on the 2000 3l non turb you have to unplug it from the dash,bit doggy i recon.

These can be reset, they are not as simple as pulling out a grommet and pressing the reset button though.
