ok, so i've done a search for 'engineering 33's' and all variations, and you can get stuffed if you think i'm gonna read through thousands of topics that contain those words.
what i want to know, from either people who do know, or have done, is what exactly i have to modify/add to my 85 2.4 turbo diesel 4runner (so all 80-early 90's model hiluxs and 4runners are applicable) so that i can legally run 33's. i know that 90% of people don't bother, however if i'm gonna do it once, i wan't to do it right, and not get ass raped by insurance for and illegal mod.
at the moment, i have fitted a 2 inch sus lift, and will add a 2 inch body lift, all complying with current guidelines for here in victoria. it also has disc brakes up front. i intend for my whole car to pass roadworthy, even if it does cost me more $$$ now, but it beats forking out a few grand or much much more if i ever happen to pick out the nicest looking merc in traffic and hit it.

Engineering 33's

Ask an engineer.
The issues are- most 33's are 12.5" wide and manufacturers specify a minimum of 8.5" rim width which are not legal in NSW, dunno about Vic. You will either need a skinnier tyre or see if tyre can be legally run on the 8" rim.
Some engineer's don't like the wheel bearing loads that the bigger tyres impose, but 33's have been passed b4.
Make sure they are not mounted on a rim with big offset- ou aren't allowed to increase ur track by more than 1". Any part of tyre sitting outside body line will need flares to cover it.
You will need sufficient braking- prolly need vented discs with the bigger Hilux calipers from later model.
You will need speedo correction.
If you approach an engineer and explain that you are willing to do all above you might get it approved.

does anyone know off-hand of any engineer (in the briz/goldcoast area) who would approve 33x12.5's on a hilux surf ? ... with a 2" body and 2" suspension lift and the tyres are covered by flares.
currently with 8" rims ... but would get 8.5" if required
the only guy i could track down in brissy here pretty much refused to help me, and wouldn't give me any direction as to what i needed to do to get an engineering certificate.

rumor is with vic roads that if you go up youmust go out to suit and handling ability is a big factor im told but its not out of the question.

I am unsure on the laws outside QLD, but in QLD it is definantly not possible to have larger tyres engineerd. QLD transpoirt will just ask you to get the manufacturers approval, which of course, you cannot get.
maximum you can go is 1" over the largest tyre specified by the manufacturer.
(this is different for trucks, trucks come under a completely different set of guidlines so changing wheel/tyre sizes on trucks is definantly engineerable. Dont ask me exactly what the definintion of a truck is)
