GQ Dash Pod
GQ Dash Pod
Hi there,
I'm going to have a go at making a custom dash pod for my GQ, anyone got any tips for me with mounting. I know the off the shelf ones bolt into the existing bolts in the dash, but not sure how.....has anyone made their own or got any pics of how to mount them?
Thanks heaps for the help.
Cheers,
Paul

Who's been a good boy then?..........
Just look at your dash area just behind the windscreen - and inside the air duct area. You'll see where two screws are that hook into the two tabs you can see on the dashpod. The leading edge at the front just slips under the top of the dash near the front air vents. Use pleny of felt on the edges and that takes up the slack if there is any. It should take about 18 seconds to fit.
I'd make one next time too. Bloody expensive for what they are - a bit of 3-ply with foam and vinyl stapled to it.

Just bunched it up and wrapped it in that 8mm slit-sleeve insulation. Just poked it out the back and then the wiring bundle drops into the gap between the windscreen rubber and dash. The rear edge of the dashpod os over this trench, so you don't even see the wiring protrude. I ran mine to the left from there, and you can see where to go once you hit the A-pillar. Continue down under the dash and wire up you power and aerial as per normal.

Yeah - I've seen them there too, but I think his point is that he wants to make a "custom" one - it was just a question of how to mount it.bogged wrote:have a look on ebay there is or was one a couple of days ago
He could buy mine if he really wants - I use a remote-head UHF these days anyway.

Slightly higher than the consoles one (from what I've seen in the pics). Going to put UHF on the left, the RHS I'm going to set up a panel to mount switches etc for accessories (compressor etc, etc.). Also want to be able to mount GPS on top of it, so I can see it and it can swivel to passenger also. Made up a template last night to make the sides, so going to start cutting it all out tonight. I just get a kick out of making some things myself, I'm sure those off the shelf ones will be better quality finish than mine will be, but I didn't make it!
Don't bet on it........ they ain't too flash. Good on you. I make a lot of stuff myself too, and get a lot of satisfaction from it.beretta wrote:I'm sure those off the shelf ones will be better quality finish than mine will be
Oh! What GPS do you have? I've constructed a holder for my Garmin GPS-III that slides into where the ash tray used to be - and it's smack-bang in the middle of both driver and navigator - and at a useful height for both. If you use the same GPS I'll take a snap of my custom holder that doesn't move at all - so punching buttons on the move doesn't move the GPS all over the place.

Spot on, exactly what I was thinking. Cut out the sides last night, just got to sand them into shape a bit more tonight and cut the front, back and top, screw and glue and then cover. trying to decide if I should go for something like boat carpet (I know it is a little ruff) or for the same finish as yours bogged, prolly need to get an upholsterer to do it maybe?
What diameter gauges are they Bruce?bogged wrote:that cost me $20 for material and $10 to fit at upholsterererererberetta wrote: or for the same finish as yours bogged, prolly need to get an upholsterer to do it maybe?

If you need any more info - let me know. I can trace the dimensions for you if you like. Then again - it's pretty obvious how I did it.
It's a great unit - even Major Communications (while they were still in business and selling GPS-III's) wanted to know if I could make a few for them. You have a GPS-III?
I really think that the upright units like the eTrex, etc are too hard to make decent cradles for. That;s why I've kept the old one for so long.....

how do you find it while moving? the reason I had mine up high is to see it clearly while going along.chrispy wrote:If you need any more info - let me know. I can trace the dimensions for you if you like. Then again - it's pretty obvious how I did it.
