Charcoal Canisters?

Charcoal Canisters?
What are the black canisters that you find in the engine bay of some toyotas. There were 2 connected to my 22r. Are they charcoal cansiters.
I am pretty sure that the hose(s) connected to them go to the fuel tank.
What do they do?
Why are they there?
Any ideas would be great.
Regards,
Nick

the fuel vapour from your tank is stored in the canister, and when the engine is running, it draws the vapour into the engine, and burns it. if you remove it, (which is illegal, and will get you a canary, at least in vic), you MUST fit a vented fuel filler cap, as the old one is sealed, and the fuel will expand in the tank, and wont be able to get out.

Yeah those are the things, one connects to the carby and one to the fuel tank. Well i am doing a v6 conversion at the moment and the canister wont be able to work and I would perfer the room..
They wouldn't even notice down here. eg my brothers suby doesn'thave a cat and it still passed the pollution test...the testing person said "as long as it passes I dont care what she ain't got!!
Where can I get one of these special filler caps and are they expensive?repco?burson?
Cheers,
Nick

you need to find out what sort of cap you have, hopefully it is an older style cap, not an unleaded screw on cap. if it is one of the push and turn ones, just go to bursons and ask for one similar, but off something built before 1974. eg, if it is big diameter, xa falcon, if small zf fairlane.
you could also just put a filter on the end, but you wouldnt really want petrol fumes in the engine bay.
you might also be able to put the hose from the tank directly onto the carby, that way it is still a sealed system, and you wont get water coming in thru the vents. but you may want to check before you do it, as i have not done that before. you could also relocate it under the guard or under the car somewhere, even under the back, maybe using a smaller canister from another car.

Location: Somewhere they can't reach me, shoot me or electrocute me...
Get a one way valve from a diesel hilux fuel tank - 84 to 90 (probably on a million other models, but this is what I've seen.) It goes on the tank vent and then vents to inside the chassis rail. Are you sure the V6 doesn't have an inlet on the manifold or somewhere for vented gases from the charcoal canister? Petrol fumes are not the type of thing you want hanging around... inside the chassis rail up high would be a good place to mount it if you are stuck for room in the engine bay.
Built, not bought.
1/8 is over 3mm! way too big! 1mm will be fine, around 40thou, otherwise your fuel will slosh out. the reason you would want to buy a proper cap, is the proper cap is baffled, to stop the fuel, and only let out the fumes. your best bet is to relocate the canister.
