Rim Offset

Opinions needed - how much rim offset is too much?

Application is for a hilux running 35" that are currently all over the spring packs with a 95mm OS. How much further should I go with strength considerations in place?

Yep. I modified my rims to suit the tyres i have but now im changing tyres the rim offset isnt needed.

offseting the rims would be a lot cheaper though.

I'm not sure about Hilux wheels, but for suzuki wheels it would still be cheaper if you went out and bought another stock offset set of rims to use then it would be if you had bought some wheel spacers.

i.e. wheel spaces are about 150 - 200 each. New wheels are 50 - 70 each.

offsetting the rims shouldn't effect the rims (unless the welding is a bodge job) They will however effect bearing life as you move the leverage further out causing different stress loads. I have majorly offset rims on my zuk, these have gained me about 2" per side but have caused a few problems with front wheel bearings. But in the scheme of things was a great mod to give me the added stability and lessen tyre rubbing

Well I need a wider track which ever way I do it. Wheels are the cheapest option. I've been quoted $175 for 1 1/2" spacers or $80 to redo each rim which would be cheaper if I remove the centres and prep the wheels myself.

I've seen Camp from POR saying that you shouldn't go larger than a 1 1/2" wheel spacer on a toy front axle but I don't know what rim offset they are using.

I'm worried about wheel bearings but also kingpin bearings. Especially as I am soon to run hydro steering.

I measured the rims last night and I can get between 40-100mm pretty easily.

I realise that for strength, I'd be better to not have any extra offset but this will limit my steering a lot. This will reduce the likely hood of broken CVs but it's not realistic.

So any other opinions?

im not sure on toy stuff but you cant get wider diffs? say from a cruiser or something?

Can't see it being worth the $$ and cost. Need to change to much stuff and already spent too much $$ getting the current diffs set up. Thanks for the suggestion.

check with "brisbane trailer and axle components" as i've heard that les bought in some rim outers so he could fit the centres to whatever offset you want.
