Hard to shift into 5th and Rev

Post by nicbeer »

As above.

It is being very hard to get into 5th and reverse in my sierra box.

Why would this b?

Only things i could think of are down in oil effect these gears only? or the shifter locating bolt has come loose maybe, or snapped.

cheers

ok this is going to be very vague.
rubber grommit somewhere near the bottom of the shifter close to gearbox broken.
i think ive read something on this here but not sure where. also may have been related to problem shifting into first and second.

hope this helps :?

i think mistaboz is refering to the rubber bush that is on top of the locating pin. this problem i always heard refered to as sloppy shifter so i am not sure if it will help but i did mine the other day $23 for the pin and bush and it only took 25 mins or so (some body glued the shifter knob in place) and it made a huge difference. my problem was getting into first and second though.

I had the same problem on my first sierra. I was told to check out the "gates" as they were probly the cause of the problem. So I removed the shifter etc and greased up the dried up gates and it worked perfectly after that.

 Had the same problem with me 92 sierra.take the lever out and then the 4 bolts to remove top cover. In here is 2 spring detents with ball bearings.I found that a quick file of the surface the ball rolls on to give the detent , was all that i needed to do and a bit or grease and it works like new.
You will understand what I mean when you have it apart.Just watch oyu dont loose the springs or the balls.
