hey guys

I got a 92' hilux, and I need to take the rear drum off. I've taken the tire off, and ive come to getting the drum off but she wont budge. there looks to be a little locker thing in the middle? I'm not sure if its tapered but she wont come out.

can someone please tell me how to get this a-hole thing off!

If the drum is quite worn, there may be a lip on the braking surface that may catch on the shoes, preventing the drum from sliding out. See if you can back off the brake adjuster, usually it is accessed through a slot on the backing plate.

I don't know about the Hilux, but on cruisers there is often a phillips head screw holding the drum to the axle. It can be covered up in mud or brake dust.

How do I unadjust it?

I really need to know how?

I cant see through properly to unadjust it, so is there a locking mechanism there or what!?

Righto mate they are a mongrel to do, but here goes

You'll need 2 flat head screwdrivers

You should see a lever, lift that up with the screwdriver.

Then you should see a little wheel beside it, as well turn that anti-clockwise until you can remove the drum

And rember be patient, i had to do my corolla rear brakes and the little slot is much smaller than the hilxes :x

If you look closely at the drum you will see there is 2 holes that have thread in them, from memory they are about 6mm so you get 2 bolts that fit the hole and screw one in a bit then the other a bit. keep alternating between the 2 and it should slowly come off. This is what i do on my 4runner so a hilux would be the same im guessing.

This only works if the drum surface is flat. If a lip has formed in the drum because of wear, you will end up bending the brake shoes and the backing plate on the drum. I know, i did it once. Lucky i was replacing the shoes anyway.

The easiest way by far is the old 2 screwdriver method as described above. One screwdriver to push on the autoadjuster, to release the adjuster wheel, and the other screwdriver on the adjuster turning it in reverse.

The bolts are 8x1.25mm. 9/10 of the time it will wind off, if not do what carter said. If that doesnt work its big hammer and chisel time, but be prepared to bend stuff.
