Bar & plate V Tube and fin intercooler
Looking at putting an air to air IC on the Front of a TD42 GQ...
There is a lot of well (cheap) priced Bar and plate coolers on ebay

How much better is tube and fin?
You pay for what you get but I wont but running huge boost but more than 10 would be nice.

Bar and plate intercoolers only work well if they have a large proportion of their surface area exposed to the airflow ie on the front of your truck. I think mack trucks etc use them. Tube and fin coolers efficiency is dependent on the amount of fins. more = better cooling. So a small t and f cooler does the same job as a much larger b and p cooler.
This is all getting remembered from about 5 years ago when I turdo'd my subaru brumby so I could well be remembering it all wrong, feel free to correct me.
At the end of the day, if you are going to up the boost on your patrol then either type of intercooler isnt going to hurt. try the bar and plate and if it doesnt do the job sell it on ebay and buy a tube and fin off a wrx

Only thing I have heard is that bar and plate has slightly more pressure drop.

so if it has a slightly higher pressure drop, cant you knock up the boost a touch to compensate it?blackmav wrote:pretty much what I was thinking, its not gunna hurt.v840 wrote:Bar and plate intercoolers only work well if they have a large proportion of their surface area exposed to the airflow ie on the front of your truck. Yeah but that means the turbo works harder, which creates more heat that the cooler has to dissipate.
Generally T&F coolers are a little less restrictive and a touch more efficient because they have turbulaters (small fins) inside the tubes, which cool the air beter due to greater surface area.
However its heaps easier to source B&P cores in different sizes, and they're easier to cut down & weld end tanks on, in my experience.
Call Fluid Dynamics in Hallam, Victoria. They make & can supply differnt sized bar & plate cores, sometimes off the shelf. Failing that try PWR.
A few years ago I was quoted ( for core only, no tanks) $450-$500 for one at 600mm long, 400mm high, by 75mm thick.

WOW $200 for a decent sized bar/plate IC. That is a bargain! They are obviously cheapo Chinese or Taiwanese imports — do you know for sure that the quality is 'decent'.zzzz wrote:These guys make very decent units...

At that price I may have to get myself one!
As soon as it was made idiot proof, someone went and designed a better idiot.

agree, maybe if someone is getting one a wrigh up on the quality??? might just be interested in one myselfJohn H wrote:WOW $200 for a decent sized bar/plate IC. That is a bargain! Their reputation is very good as far as I have heard.
I will be getting a FMIC setup for my skyline shortly so if you can hold out a week or so I can tell you precisely what the qualisty is like.
I don't think you will have an issue

You will need to cut
Half the milk crate backing from your plastic grill
The bottom bits of the grill which clip to the front of GQ
replaced them with cable ties thay break awanyway
Pending on how you ...we run it ? mabe a bit of iner front gard behind the plastic
crap above wheel
You will need to remove bonnet catch support
Move horn
Holesaw bigarse holes right next to headlights
Which is 930MM I think between the head lights so rember that when getting your end tanks made up as a 65mm bend is close to 200mm long
Your bonnet may only just close if you run one a pipe over the top of the engine to get to the intercooler '' It gets tight near washer bottle .
The most $$$$ will be spent in the rubber hoses to join it all togther.
And don`t forget extra hose to act as a flexi either side of the intercooler so it dont shake to bits
I NEED A BEER NOW IM STUFFED

its a 2.8 so may have different pipes but the mounting of the cooler is very neat, I was just going to cut a big ass hole in the grill.ozy1 wrote:Stool,
I take it you have an I/C fitted to your rig in the exact way you described? if so, do you have pics as im puttin a turbo on my 4.2 next week, and want to I/C it soon after,
all help appreciated,
should be well into mine within the next month.
I'm thinking about getting a tank with the inlet and outlet on the same side to try and avoid the long runner up and over the motor.
Pretty sure they are just called a double pass IC.
Or one of these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/FMIC-Turbo-Inter ... dZViewItem

im aware that he is running the 2.8, but i love pics, and to see the way its mounted and pipe work would be sweet, blackmav wrote:its a 2.8 so may have different pipes but the mounting of the cooler is very neat, I was just going to cut a big ass hole in the grill.ozy1 wrote:Stool,

one other thing having the outlets on the one side, like the pic above is going to make the run from I/C to inlet longer, would be easier if you had inlet and outlet different sides id think,
as in

-[ic]-
instead of
____| |
-[ic]---
and running a pipe accross the top will reduce air flow to radiator,
