cactus cd player

my cd player has turned into a supercharger. every bump it goes over it starts whining like a turbo has any one had this problem if so is it f@#ked or fixable?

Sounds like it's having trouble tracking. Could just be a simple case of the laser lense needing a clean- or mechanical wear and an alignment of the tracking circuitry...

Possibly try to find one of those laser cleaning CDs and give that a try (I'm not sure if they work or not BTW!) Otherwise open it up and gently use a cotton bud soaked in metho to clean the lense.

it actually sounds to me (as a communication/audio technician) to be a fault in your grounding, does it happen with the revs of your car? like when u acclerate does it go up with the noise?

go to a audu=io place and ask them but it sounds like that

If the sound is coming from the CD player itself (and not out the speakers) then it is highly likely to be a tracking issue. The sound is the laser tracking mechanism trying to follow the music on the CD- a shock such as a bump in the road can be enough to upset them if the tracking is only just coping.

(not wishing to big note myself, but I'm an electronics tech who has completed a CD player repair course.)

That's a different story then! I take it this noise is coming through the speakers?

It sounds like noise on the +12v line to the head unit. You can buy inline chokes (or inductors; a coil of wire wound on a former basically) that will filter the noise out. They are fitted in series with the +12V line.

If it's only happening over bumps then it's worth checking out all the wiring connections as Jason mentioned (or it could be an internal fault in the head unit)

Sometimes you have to just accept the fact that God has given you a great excuse to buy a brand new MP3 player head unit. If you investigate too much, you may end up fixing it and having to keep the old one. And that could make God angry.

I always buy a new one in a situation like this just to be on the safe side.

Yes, if it's a cheapie it could be to time to cut your losses!

I have had great success with those inline chokes for alternator related noise- and you could always put it inline with your new head unit for extra filtering if it doesn't fix the old one.
