hey fellas i have an 89 pajero (petrol) and i was wondering if there is a custom snorkels set up that is cheaper that an airtec or safari i have seen the snorkeks with the stainless steel pipes that fit into the plastic joiners and i was wondering if i could buy one of these custom set ups off the shelf or is it easier to make one ur self

See your local exhaust specialist and ask them if they will manufacture the steel tubing and the bends. Then you'll have to drill the holes, make up mounting flanges, and find some hose to join the whole lot to your airbox. And of course, you'll need to get a snorkle head too. I thought about getting one made but decided save up and got a Safari. Fitted it myself to save a dollar though...

dunno if this is kinda what ur interested in, but scheck out this thread on the snorkel i just fitted to my jabber, im happy :D cost all of about 100 bucks, there was no way i was paying 500 for a safari, even the local ARB bloke didnt think they were that much and was shocked :shock: , but yeh check this out if it helps

yeh no worries mate ;) was easy as, didnt have a hole saw big enough so was cut with the drill then filed out, but yeh all in all im happy, it came off a fj40 cruiser, so i rekon it did well to get it there, works a treat too :D

I am planning on making one of my own for my 87 SWB. While I would like the Safari, there is this cost thing to deal with.

So my hope was to make my own, but mount it just like a Safari would go. That way I can put a Safari on another day when I have more funds.

To do this, I managed to get the help of a fellow member on 4x4Wire and he sent me the template from his Safari after he was done installing it. My intentions are to scan it and the directions so others can make use of if desired.

Let me know if you are interested. I am out on vacation next week though, so it won't happen too quickly.

If you're in water that deep your dizzy will suffer before your engine does.
Snorkels are more of an appearance thing for most people really.
And why do snorkels go as high as the roof line, above the drivers head hieght, do many people drive this deep in water?
For cost, effort and practicalbility your better off with a tarp tied over the bonnet for the few crossings you need a snorkel for.

Because you can hit a short section of water that would suck into the engine but not short the dizzy. I would rather have to get a tow and spray the dizzy with wd40, than get a tow and have to pull the plugs out.

They also help when driving through dust holes; you'll often throw dust up over the bonnet, but you don't often throw dust up over the roof.

And it's not too difficult to waterproof a distributor...

ditto, or even worse...pull the rods. :shock:

Other issue with location of the snorkel inlet is visibility. Better to have it up high so it doesn't obstruct the driver's view.

Man it would be good if you could scan the safari template and post it somewhere with a link to it.
I like your thinking re custom build now, but dependinmg upon the apearance would maybe like to fit the safari at a later date without additional holes in the body

IMHO,

Totally disagree with that.

It will impress you where a petrol motor will go with a well waterproofed coil, dizzy and connections to them. wack a new set of leads on and they'll go through some VERY deep crossings. My old 4 runner regularly went through a crossing about 20m long with water upto the windscreen at times. and even with battery covered (so that headlights would extinguish) and water coming in the firewall she'd keep going. Once before I put the snorkel on it sucked water .
BTW, the dizzy was very low in these too as it wasn't even OHC.

Found the roof height snorkel great on our big trip last month in keeping the dust out of the aircleaner (although even with the donaldson I couldn't keep it out completely, Damn bull dust!)
