6.5 chev in SWB MAV
6.5 chev in SWB MAV
G'day, I'm looking at the moment of replacing my petrol/gas 4.2, 5 speed manual. With a 6.5 chev turbo diesal . But I dont any idea of how well it would perform in my shorty. The shorty has a (2 spring) and a (2 body lift) wiht 35's.
But what i would really like to know is. Dose anybody have any idea of how the shorty would perform with the 6.5 V8 diesal. Also I' m abit power hungry and it would be turbo'd and intercooled. Thank's

Well i can say this. We have a guy in our club with a 6.5 V* Chev without Turbo in a Toyota LandUSER 60 series and man it hammers. It is able to fully spin the back wheels on the black top on take off, and overtakes my 4.2 LWB up hills. add a turbo and intercool and you will have a race car, V8 sound at the rear, Diesel knock at the front, the best of both worlds
In a Short Wheel base u would be very well off, as they have alot less weight than a 60 series.

AA's for Quitters
you will have power to burn man ... they don't get up and move real quick ... but it will keep turning the 35s even when ur stopped dead
16k for the conversion tho .. + intercooling ...
kowari motors in townsville does alot of V8 diesel conversions
he now has implanted a turbo 6.5 into a 20 seater bus and it moves pretty dam good
also has a naturally asthmatic 6.5 in a GU wagon and its got power to burn
it ur goin up hill and u got traction it'll prolly flip you over with the bulk torque

personally i would go the 4.2 turbo diesel.Rainman wrote:The mav is going to end up as a comp truck only, so i want big power and with wheel base it will be changed to a MWB soon. Also the other engine I'm think of going with is a 4.2 turbo diesal that's been done by JPC. just don't know which would be faster
but saying that chev motor aint that bad you can easily get 150kw at the back wheels with 35s from a 4.2 diesel if you put the money into it.
probably be a minimum 6k setup + motor

figures in other threads show the chev not to be any heavier than the patrol donk.viperguy wrote:not a bad conversion if u had the dolars..shortys need something heavy to keep the front end down. have a massive tendancy to want to aim skywards and lift front end when climbing..due to wheel base. massive torque output..would be sweet
i would go that new chev outta the corvettes if you are spending those $$
500 odd hp and 800nm. Think its around the 8lt mark from memory lot lighter than the diesel as it is based on a small block ls1 bottom end.

bogged u are right..they are about the same weight. i stand corrected
i had the oppurtunity to drive the new gmc sierra's while i was in the states earlier this year. my boss over there drove a gmc 3500 dually with the 6.6 duramax with a allison 5 speed auto...now this is the donk and box that should be grafted into a patrol. talk about freight train torque and seamless gear changes. i was in this thing every day for about 3 months and i miss it more than anything else i had over there..lol
on another note..crate petrol motors..i was dumbfounded by how cheap they were over there. hp is so cheap. 502 big block injected turnkey crate motors built by gmc, 900 factory hp, 3yr 60,000m warrenty, 10,990 dollars us.
sorry if im of trak on the topic but i thought id share since bru suggested these motors

Hi guys,
My trip car is a LWB GQ in which I put a 6.2 chevy engine, TH400 gear box and NP208 transfer case. I used to have 4.625 ring&pinion, but I changed it to 4.11....
What to say: great low end torque (I use t/case very few times...), nice engine (and very simple one also)), very good gear box, not so good t/case (the reduction is great - 3 to 1 instead of 2:1 in nissans, but the forks pads wear preaty quick...). The consumption is jsut normal (about 15-18 l/100km).
Its a good engine, but I really think that it can be improved...maybe a turbo, maybe a supercharger...;-))
My advice?!? Go and install it by yourself...its a very simple swap, no space science...just a logical way of thinking, 2 engine supports, few weldings, a chevy crossmember on top of the nissan genuine one...new tailshafts...and that's it. NO jocking!!
PS: my daily driver is a real Chevy Blazer, same 6.2 engine, but TH700R4 and NP241. The Chevy runs better then the Nissan...maybe because of the 4 speed auto tranny...maybe a better injection pump (which I have a brand new one, so soon i'll be change it)...who knows...
Regards, Gabriel

GQ MWB 105 ", DID Mitsubishi engine with big turbo, fiber glass body, Boogger 38.5/11/16, 2x8274, 5 link front, triangulated 4-link rear, SAW 14" and 16" coil-overs, , 5.1 r&p.
you can install it yourself no welding required .. marks adapters have
full kits consisting of bolt up engine mounts and adapter plate to the
nissan gearbox etc ... only thing is with these engines your cooling system has to be in A1 condition
if you dont like the low range gearing go crawler gears much cheaper!
still its a $16k conversion ... go for it if u have that spare laying around
