Running my TD42 on Biodiesel?

Post by mrbonk »

Greetings,
Just wondering if there's any reason why I shouldn't try running my TD42 engined Patrol on Biodiesel? I'd be making it myself from used oil. Anyone else in here doing this with a TD42?

In all honesty it sounds like a great absolutely wonderfull idea. For a bloke like me that likes Sweet Deals, c'mon making your own fuel that is the best idea..

But I did a fairly thorough search around the internet. There is enough information on how to do it. I also went seaching for the cons of doing such a thing...

One bloke with a similar indirect injection diesel in one of his yanky trucks had his fuel pump clag up very very badly. He spent money on a rebuilt one - so around $2000 and the same thing happened. He was going to painstaking lengths to filter/clean his Fuel but it still happened. I could also see a problem with injectors clogging.

One thing I know that is stressed about diesel engines is the quality of fuel that must be used. ie; clean clean clean clean clean.

I think the cheaper cost of making it yourself would be offset by the decreased longevity of vital components - Necessitating expen$ive rebuilds/replacements...

But then again for the PRO side there is a diary of a bloke that drove from canada to mexico for some absurdely low amount of money.. Mixing his fuel as he went. Dropping into Take Away joints and pinching the oil and filtering it on the side of the road. But it was a clapped out old car....

So Search search search google is friend. There is a shart load of info that will help you to decide...

Mr Bonk
I too have been looking at this at length for a while and have had some feed back from a couple of blokes.
Firstly if you use Biodeisel it has a detergent effect on the buildup within your fuel system. This will strip a lot of muck and deposit it in the fuel filter. Ive heard of up to 6 changes before regular running occurs.
This appears to be the biggest problem.
One fella was gradually increasing the % he used in normal fuel to leesen the impact. Last I heard he as up to 50/50 blend with no problem whatsoever. He took about a year to get there.

Im also assuming that you know the difference between Straight Vege Oil and Biodeisel. Because they are very different.

Like you Im up for it but am doing the research first to avoid stuffing the thing completely.
What, haven't you ever done lines of International Roast off a hookers back with $100 notes?

I`ve looked at it in detail myself and have made the Biodiesel in small quantities for experiment I have td42 also. Paying revenue is one big drawback as is getting ripped of now with the price of methanol. I`m quite sure the td42 will run on BD. The fuel cleans the gunge out of your tank so you get those throwaway inline filters and watch for them clogging. Fuel lines should be modern enough on a Patrol to stand up to BD. As far as I am aware the best injector pump for BD or veg oil is a Bosch in line type but many others will work ok. I think the Patrol pump is a copy of the Bosch Zexel. It may be what they call a rotary pump. All in all I don`t think I`ll bother making it. Put the time into real work and buy the diesel.
