pretty much, and lower ratio (usually), and less stress on components within the drivetrain

why is that? are the gears in the portals supposed to go before the anything in the drive train does? or is there just less stress because of the gearing...?

Bingo.
2:1 (normally) ratio reduces the stress on the drive train
