Just asking some opinions on remote canister shocks from people who run them or know mates that do.
I am not after coil overs just shocks for my Gu Ute. The ute is for comp work. I am currently running konis Front and Ranchos Rear (Ranchos for the length required)
Are they overkill, value for money? Are they as good as talked about.
What are some of the outback/winch challenge guys running?

Remote Canister Shocks
Depends what sort of remote canister shocks you're talking about. A mate runs single OME LTR's in his comp truck, and they do resist fade etc, but they aren't much more than a glorified NitroCharger in his view.....will be fitting an additional LTR, plus hydraulic bumpstops to each front corner for next year's OBC.
If he could afford it, then he'd be using King coil-overs without a doubt. By the time he's bought 6 LTR's (4 front, 2 rear) plus bumpstops, he could have bought 4 Kings and had it right the first time.

Rohan from VIC has either fox or king coilovers on each cnr of a MWB GQ. And with 285rwkw they where hitting some very high speeds and apparantly they resisted fade very well.
These are the same type of shock used by the desert races in the likes of the BAJA1000 etc. These things have huge wheel travel and high stroke rate so would cook a std shock in no time.
With the Fox shocks I dont think there is much difference between the coilover and the non-coil over. And come with remote canister (or not). But they aint cheap. But think since they are very tuneable and rebuildable. And no need to run twin shocks. The price is pretty good. As there is a bit of work to do to make the twin shocks fit.
As for the rear I think just a good set of Koni Raid (think there the heavy duty set) or something like that maybe adequate.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
We are developing a bolt in kit using FOX shox, we tested what was available, and found the Fox to be the version that works best, and best build quality.
We are using adjustable bypass shocks.
We are also working on a bolt on sub frame coil over conversion, because we can get more travel from the shocks, that the spring design in the factory position can stay with, meaning the coil spring becomes unseated.

fox shocks are a whole HUGE step up up from conventional shocks.

Have a good hard look at what 2x4 buggies and truggies go thru in a desert race - and you will see why they all use that style shock.

Your right about not having Hydralic bumps stops, but it is fitted with coilovers plus bypass shocks in each corner. The bypass shocks have been valved pretty firm, so that once the shock piston passes the external bypass valving the piston rate has to drop dramatically due to internal valving (becoming very similar to a hydro bump stop)GQ TROL wrote:Watching the OBC DVD, Rohan's middie was soaking up some big jumps / hits very easily. OME shocks are not long enough for my truck. Ask today at arb.
Also i would rather spent the money on decent remote canister shocks then put twin shocks in the front. Then later on do remote canisters after all.
My truck is resonable heavy so most springs and shocks dont last long either.

mate haven't got on to bert for ya yet. canisters are $$ to fit later prob $100 plus extra over buying already done. some shocks need a hole tapped fox etc need too be degassed valve taken out line put in oil level etc sorted and re gassed. I wouldn't bother get remotes from the word go.

my fox didnt require any of the above to fit.
Dont know if you have tried the Ridepro comp shocks though, 730mm open rears, 435mm closed, and 405mm closed front, 660mm aprox open, for $150ish RRP each. Not sure how they compare to OME lengths, but I have 6" springs in my truck.
Have been running Ridepro in my GU ute and been happy with them, but we have afew orders for the fox in emulsion, and bypass, so we are making the fitting kits off mine at the moment .
