Ok, a mate is building this and I thought I'd share some build up pics.

Base vehicle is a 2003 TD5 Auto Disco HSE, complete with ACE, SLS etc etc, all being retained.

DII chassis and running gear is being used with Maxi Axels, ARB Lockers F&R, 35" Claws.

Here are the pics.

It's not costing that much, I know what he has paid for everything :D

Disco was a write off (Repairable).

i met a bloke that had a mechanically tired old rangie, and bought a written off d2 td5 cheap and has put the rangie body on it, it was just a roll over casulity and mech brand new.

Was the disco his own wite off or did he score it at an auction. I've been to a few damaged vehicle auctions and not yet seen one land rover let alone a td5 one. I've always had this in the back of my head as a way to convert my v8 disco. Keep us updated though it looks like it will be a quality build.

Hi there

I'm sorry to be the first one to say this, but the cage looks ugly, weak and VERY little functional, also, is that galvanized pipe ? I wouldn't be the one to sit in that cage during a roll. No offence, though.

AFAIK the roll bar (just behind the seats) is the only part that is meant to provide rollover protection, the rest is just to support the body and windscreen.

That's sweet. My dream car is a bush ranger.

I think you will find the bar work is built out of black cold drawn pipe, assembled/welded then galvanised.

My Dakar has a similar cage made out of black pipe. This is the way the factory in the UK makes them.

I noticed the cage has changed from the design used in mine and I tend to agree it doesn't look as strong as mine.

That is correct, and that and the body are the only things not custom made, it was supplied by Bruce Davis.

Those cages have suvived a 70mph, 20ft high roll over on stockton beach.

And no it is not gal, just gal dipped.

I note you have your ECU sanwiched in the side of the vehicle beside the drivers seat.

This area of my DAKAR (built by John Davis) is far from water, or even, weather proof.

I'd be a little concerned for its longevity.

I run my ECU behind the glovebox as that looks about the driest place in a DAKAR. "driest" is a relative word. That means it doesn't flood!

Build quality sure looks good.

Woohoo! When do we get to see the pics?

Just imagine though, turning up to a Rock Crawling event. Unhinge the shell, and *walla*, instant rock crawling tube buggy!

Owning one of these and having rolled at Tenterfield in June 99 (Emu Creek), the cages are strong enough.

As for the jump, see the below link, or watch Crusty Demons of Dirt III.
John Davis, of course, was driving...

Has stock disco rear springs up front, with air bags retained in the rear.

Slightly off topic but...

Can you get these in a kit?
What is needed/required to put one together (I have the Range Rover)
And how much roughly would a kit cost?

New i think the are about 15k for the body and roll cage. The rest is custom.

Is this being built at the landrover Spares joint in Hervey Bay? I went past on Monday and noticed there was some work going on there and from the pics in this thread it looks like the inside of their workshop. Was almost going to call in and say Hi but didnt want to disturb you guys on Boxing Day. Then when i went past yeasterday the shop was all shut up.

Whilst the colour isn't me and I prefer the shape of the Dakar, I think the quality of the build is outstanding.

If you make it any better you won't be able to go off-road.
