Looking at buying a lateish model dual cab hilux to replace the disco
It will be mostly touring and moderate offroad 4wding

What problems do i look for and what are the engines like, petrol vs desiel and is the ifs any good and to what height can you raise them.

IFS... no good, max susp lift is bout 2", without going into braket/spacer work..

Newer engines have a bit more stink than the older, id be looking at the 5L-T (3.0l turbo diesel)

front diff is relatively weak as it is a small (7.5") centre...

Id keep the disco... or trade it in for a TD5 disco/TD 80 series
Cheers,
Dan.

i drive a hilux (97), its good all over except for the IFS and lack of power engine wise, 2.4 petrol!
the new 4lt v6 might be worth a go, but lifting them isn't worth it due to the IFS

What are you doing defecting to Toyota? I'm a hilux driver myself. I love the lux but only cause I can't afford a TD5 defender. and cause I've wanted a lux since i was 17. You're taking a step backwards if you went a lux for touring.
