GQ CV's
GQ CV's
Ok there's alot of talk about GQ CV's being ez to bust, what I want to know ?? Who has themselves broken a GQ CV, how did you do it and what driveline and tires do you run. ??
I have broken only about around 6 and most were with Big power, big tires, front locker in and front bouncing 3 feet in the air.
I think they are strong, and there are not as many brakages as talked about. Ok prove me wrong.

seen several go with lockrights, only a couple with airlockers but that appears to be caused by too much lock with busted steering stops, since he fixed that, no more problems.

That was a classy Pad
I have only seen them break in comps and I am not too worried about breaking much after seeing what sort of canning some of the stock stuff gets......

I have had this nissan for about 9 months of fairly idiotic driving and havn't managed to pop one yet. I use to break toyota ones running little 33's.
Was talking to BJ about this yesterday. The nissan CV's are only between 1-7mm bigger in diameter (depending on where you measure) and have 1 extra spline. But they are obviously quite a bit stronger.. better design? better materials? better quality control?

Apologies for hijacking the thread but, any ideas on what a set of nissan axles would cost?
Obviosuly it depends on the type of axle etc.
I thought GQ front axles were fairly weak:
GQ Patrol 88-98 cab chassis rear 1.51" 37spline
GQ Patrol 88-98 front 1.26" 31spline
GQ Patrol 88-98 rear 1.31" 33spline
Toyota 1.31" 30spline
Is that all toyotas? Or are there differences between models? There must be I just don't know the tech info...
Nissan cab chassis rear looks good to me
Can anyone give me some more tech info on axle strengths of toy and nissan axles?
cheers

most toyotas, hil;ux and cruiser are 30 spline 1.31"
the cab chassis rear with 37 splines also has a 33 spline front BUT....the CV bells are the same size, although the axles are more heavy duty (will not bolt into GQ front end though)
and singo, it wasnt a pad, the guy who has busted maybe 20 or 30, only lives up the road, has a front ARB locker, and enteres a lot of competitions!

So you are running your TSL's on the 30spline 1.31" axles?
And ruff is running his 38" claws on the same?
And cheezy is running his rig on smallish nissan axles?
snappy snappy?
Do you break the front or the rear very often?
How big is the ring gear in these diffs?
Where do the strengths and weaknesses lie in them?
Just trying to compare all of this to jeep dana44 which is 30spline, 1.31" which has an 8.5" ring gear. Unfortunately we have the dana30 front which is little - 1.16" 27spline.
Good information. Love learning new stuff.
cheers

YES

YES (semi float rear is the main difference) and he has 8" ring gear, i have 9.25"

snappy snappy?
39.5x15, SBCpumping here!!
Do you break the front or the rear very often?
front birfs, yes, front axles, yes, rear axles yes, rear pinion, yes
How big is the ring gear in these diffs?
hilux = small
cruiser = less small (compared with dana 60)
Where do the strengths and weaknesses lie in them?
strong crown wont break that shiat, unless the pinion breaks off and goes into it, with well setup suspension, the fuses in the front ARE the birfs, with longfields its the axles, rear, once you sort the floaters, i goes again to the axle

44s, CTMs, alloys, heaps of strength!

the 260 DOESN'T FLOAT sadly...until the GU patrols there was no full floater......and i dunno what resides under the leaf sprung GU utes, but lets just say it looks like the beef (centred rear)

Ha ha, yeah but they are the most solid part of the drivetrain... hardened steel shafts and drive cups.
There are splines on the axles into the diff outdrives and on the the stub axles that are about 6mm (0.2361")by about 15-20 splines (I'll check tonight) scales up to 1.77" full scale at 1:7.5 scale

RE:GQ CV's
Since we are talking CV's, I was trying to reverse up a steep hill the other day. Due to some lge ruts in front that would have done alot of damage. And in doing so with the front locker in I think I have broken both CV's (not sure yet the shop hasn't sarted work yet). My SWB GQ is a TD42 running 33muds, and standard gears.
As it turned out that while winching the car side ways I have still done a bit of panel damage so will have to give the insurance company a ring next week.
Turps :(

broke CV
Got my car back yesterday, the damage was. Left CV and Right axle(the little one), luckly they where able to use the right cv so they just stuck it in the left side and everything in the right side is new. Must learn how to do some of this stuff my self as phuck it is expensive, rebuilding all that shit.

Guys, find out from someone how to change a CV.
Hilux ones take about 20 minutes to change and i'm pretty sure nissan take about the same time.
You'll kick youself once you realise how easy it is to do.
If you do it youself it will only cost you for parts.
If you getting serious and looking at running bigger tyres just buy second hand ones. It won't cost as much.
Also don't worry about all the gasket's and seal's as you'll start snapping them so often, its a waste of time and money replacing these each time you have it apart.

POS is right, you will kick yourself when you findout how EZ it is to change them. If you have all the tools and practice, you can do it under 10 min ea side.
Wreckers sell secondhand ones for anywhere between $85 to $200 ea.
depending on how hard they are to get .
I am trialing custom ones, up until now we have had small probs, but after 6 months we have finaly got it, just a bit more thrashing with my new tires and we will be selling them.
