Which rope/wire for PTO?
Hey fellas,
I've got my PTO just about sorted and I'm about to sort out the rope/cable. I was planning on using plasma rope instead of wire cable.
I've done a bit of a search to see if anyone has asked what are the pro's and cons of using plasma on a PTO and couldn't find anything specific.
so far from what I have read I figure this:
Pros:
- weight savings
- doesnt kink , spools easier?
- easy to handle
- safer
- floats in water
cons:
- degrades when exposed to UV,oils, crap, mud?
- not the best thing for a PTO? (cos no clutch - is this true? why?)
its got some festy old fairlead welded to the brace.. I can unscrew the rollers if required.. not sure if its possible to replace the whole thing without removing it permanently.. just wondering if this would be an issue for the plasma rope..
The old winch wire had some nasty crimps and kinks about 20mts into a 30mtr run (i guess) so I'm not to keen on using it and was hoping plasma would be better..
Thanks for your help guys...

are you planning on comping ur rig ?
how often do you plan on using ur winch and what sorta terrain u normally drive.
You really need to run a hawse fairleed with rope as the rollers can catch and break the rope.
id say just get a new batch of steel cable and run that, esp if your driving in more mud etc.

spazbot: no comps.. yet! but i guess a PTO isn't really a comp spec winch in the first place is it..
I guess its just another good thing to have in case you need it.. I usually drive a good range of different terrain: rock, sand, and the occasional mud bog.. and can't see it being used all that often now I think about it..
With the added weight steel cable would add, would reducing the length help keep weight down? I guess it would also limit your options when it comes to use it too.. I was thinking about 30mtrs is probly as much as Id need..
Hamo: I guess I hinted I was thinking of going plasma and pcman made mention of clutch issues with plasma.. which is why I thought id ask here.. not every one here trawls 3rd rock and the more opinions the better..

really the extra weight of steel cable makes no diff to ya as u said ur not comping etc. why spend $600 on rope that will get trashed in a few runs when u can have the cable for $90 and it will last a hell of alot longer.
a while back i was all keen for rope 2 but after weighing it up there is no real reason to be running it if in not comping every 2nd weekend etc..

does that bug you ?Hamo wrote:didn't you ask the same qestion on 3rd rock

Shorty i woudln't bother with rope its pretty pricey to begin with which you would already know ,
id go the cable and regarding your fairlead i pissed mine off cause you can remove it of the front rail easy enough ,
and run a hawse type fairlead , which ive already asked on outers ,
can you use it with wire rope and everyone seems to say that you can.
If anything its better.
There are guys that have run this in comps for 2 years without changing it. As long as you look after it properly. The problem that you may have is getting a rope that you can use confidently like 12mm minimum and being able spool enough onto your drum to make it viable. As long as you wash the rope at the end of the day and protect it from abrasive edges during winching, it'll last for ages. You're not using it for comps so if your metal cable breaks then you'll be in the shit but if you have synthetic then you just tie it to the hook or splice it back together. If it's totalled then you can just make winch extension ropes out of it.spazbot wrote:really the extra weight of steel cable makes no diff to ya as u said ur not comping etc. why spend $600 on rope that will get trashed in a few runs when u can have the cable for $90 and it will last a hell of alot longer.

yer sorry like you and hey charger i'm a menber on both for the info.not every one here trawls 3rd rock and the more opinions the better..
No i just get sick of reading the same thing on both boards its like some peaple have attention deficite disorder ( and sorry i don't say this to offend anyone)does that bug you ?
The clutch is the same one you change gears with if you wan't a better set up buy an electric winch. I have a pto winch on a shorty and have been advised by a toyota mechanic to get rid of it because they are very easy to overload the transfer case and blow the case to pieces i have a 12.000 lb electric winch on my fj45 troopy and this works fine and is easyer to use (agian sorry if this offends anyone) so the pto winch has been removed from the shorty and i'm thinging of using the pto set up of the transfer case to drive a hydrolic punp for a hydrolic winch .pcman made mention of clutch issues with plasma

Hamo , the pto winches have a shear pin to break prior to doing any damage ( hopefully ) , the thing that i am setting up on my winch is a slip clutch on the drive shaft that will slip before its over loaded and also dont have to worry about shear pin replacment .
But what you say driving a hydroulic pump of the pto unit , thats what i will do next time aswell.
I think I would stay with a wire rope.
And I have often wondered, why not comp with a PTO winch. I know they are not as readily available nowadays, but if you had one, they would be definately faster than any electric winch on the market. And the speed variation is virtually infinate. And, you can still drive while winching, so I really cant think of any reason not to use one in a comp.
