How effective are BFG M/T's with 50% tread left
I'm looking at a set of used BFG muddies with 50% tread (about 8mm) left on them to buy and I'm wondering how they would perform in black sticky mud. (entering a charity comp.) What would be a reasonable offer?
Cheers

Road Ranger
BFG muddies
Thanks guys
The size is an uncommon one:
32.7"x9.5"x15".......tall and on the skinny side but any wider with this diameter and they'll rub badly in the front guards of my Rodeo.
Being 50% worn the diameter would be about 32".
The set is less than 400 but if they would perform worse than my new 9R/15 (29") desert duellers then I'll give them a miss.

having owned muddies i can vouch for their excellent performance and will say they will leave your dessert duelers for dead if you plan on doing harder stuff with them beyond the relms of an all terrain.
however at 50% tread they are on the way out, not getting better and being a soft compound handle well on the road but wear easily if driven hard...... at under $400 sounds like a good deal.
cheers,
nathan.

Re: BFG muddies
The best part of any Mud Terrain Tyre is the first 10-20% while they have square edges. thats the BEST of them... thats why so many are sold with 80+% on em.
bfg muddies
thanks for that guzzle.
Yeah I really only want them for the charity comp. then I might pass them on.
Just want them for a bit of extra clearance and more grip than me desert duellers.
The comp has dirt, sand, logs, tyres, rocks and some patches of bleack sticky mud for good measure.
Who knows, I might win some new tyres

Does anyone know if 16mm is the correct tred depth when these tyres are new?

BFG
Yes this tyre is listed in the BFG Tyres products section. (USA Site)
It is an unusual width for that diameter/rim size and when I enquired about them a few months ago at some outlets in SA I was told they weren't available in Oz so I dont know how these got here, maybe a buy in. Pity because that size is the ideal max. for a stock Rodeo.
I dont know how old they are nor does the seller. They are 2nd hand stock in small mechanical business takeover.
They dont look damaged in any way. Lots of mud stains but

400 bucks was offered and taken
too much IMO
Looking at getting a set of brand new Maxxis Buckshot Mudders now instead 235/85/16 $190 each

Re: bfg muddies
According to my tyre calculator, they don't quite make 32 inches.sudso wrote: Looking at getting a set of brand new Maxxis Buckshot Mudders now instead 235/85/16 $190 each
Re: bfg muddies
31.7 as well but these arent the BFG's he was talkin about, so they will be smaller.Emo wrote:According to my tyre calculator, they don't quite make 32 inches.sudso wrote: Looking at getting a set of brand new Maxxis Buckshot Mudders now instead 235/85/16 $190 each

Still better than my current 29" a/t's.Emo wrote:According to my tyre calculator, they don't quite make 32 inches.sudso wrote: Looking at getting a set of brand new Maxxis Buckshot Mudders now instead 235/85/16 $190 each
Those BFG's that were for sale are 32.7 diameter when new. At 9.5" wide they looked pretty skinny so a lot of sidewall compared to the width being a 15".
The 235/85/16's would probably hold onto the rim better than the above at low pressures when turning having about 1" less sidewall height so that's why I looking at that size now.
A 33x12.5x15 would rub like mad in the front guards while turning and probably do some damage. Not a lot of space in them front wheel wells of rodeo's.
