Electronic Dizzy

Post by chev28 »

Any thought?

I have just put an electronic distributor on the 3Y motor(replacing the old point one). Runs well (no different really but hopefully will stay in tune).

Should I bypass the ballast resisitor and run 12V all the time or continue as for the old coil and run through the ballast resistor and thereby run 6-8V after starting?

Anyone tried this sucessfully?

Thanks

What coil are you using? The original that's designed for the ballast resistor?

Good thought David but Toyota put the coil in the distributor for the 3y. I noticed that the tarago, etc use the ballast resistor so maybe I should go along woth that. It runs well enough through the ballast resistor. I just know that some Holden electronic dizzy upgrades run without the ballast resistor and supposedly get better spark.

I'd be a bit wary of running without the ballast resistor. The coil will run really hot and I wouldn't expect it to last very long.

Getting rid of them points will be such a bonus. I did the same thing to a Gemini many years ago and what a difference it made. Like you say it doesn't go out of tune.

Still lookin for the distributor and points on the diesel Rocky - must be there somewhere.

Sounds good, I'll stick with the ballast resistor. Don't want to have to replace the whole unit for a burnt out coil.

Thanks

The coil is built into the distributor?! What a strange design..... Does the coil lead run internally as well to the cap somehow?

Definitely keep the ballast resistor if you're running a coil designed for one.

True, it is a strange design. The distributor has a bit of a square buldge on one side where the coil is housed and the cap does have a circuit for the coil to rotor centre. Quite a bulky thing really.

Cheers
