Auto and twin xfer setup with 4.8's and 37s - too low?

Post by TWISTY »

Am getting a Vitara 4sp auto and xfer off Mark (Mud4B) in the next week or so to fit into my zook. I'm still not fully clued up with all this gearing stuff, so thought I'd get a bit of feedback on my proposed setup.

Currently I've got the 1.6l Vitari Motor and Std 5spd manual with a RockLobster Xfer Case going to hilux diffs with 4.8 ratios. This setup worked great with the 33's....but I've got 37's on the way.

I wanted to fit an auto anyway, so thought why not go twin xfer cases at the same time as it seems easy enough to remove the front output from the Vit xfer case, and I've got heaps of fab work to do to it anyway, so whats a bit more.

So, what are your thoughts on this...final setup will be, 1.6l Vitari with 4spd Auto and Std Vit Xfer into Rocklobster Xfer and then 4.8 Diffs with 37's?

Thanks...

p.s. Mud4b - have you got the auto at your shop yet?

I can't really say, 'cept that with the Vit T/case you have the option of going into lolo. I am going to fit a !.6 with 4 sp auto and a grs2 and 3.909 diffs, i'm on 31's though. I fully expect the auto to handle the gearing nicely. Hope it does.
If it aint a biggie to fit the Vit T/case, then I would. 37's are pretty big.

The other thing I could do, if it's border line on being geared too low....would be to sell the Rocklobster Case (which shouldn't be hard) and stick a std sierra case in.

PM ljextreme off the board as ask him some questions about this......

He is running 16v vitara and 5sp box with vitara transfer into a series 1 rockhopped sierra case on nissan 4.6's running 36 swampers and he finds himself in low low pretty much all the time..........

For ease lose the vitara transfer and fit 6.4 calmini gears and be done with it.....

twin transfer cases

Post by ljxtreem »

Hi :D

I got twin cases in my zook 1.6 efi 5 speed vit box and transfer in to a 1ltr sierra transfer then into 4.6 diffs this was ok with 36' tyres though I was allways in 1st gear, though I think an auto would fix this problem.

I did also run a 4:1 rockhopper in the sierra box for a while, this gave me shit loads of gears even with 39's, most of the time driving in 2nd or 3rd.

Hope I have bee3n some help

PS: I am selling my twin case setup, If you are interested its in the forsale section.

twistytoy have you had any advances on this setup yet ...?

Im still pondering what way i go when the time comes to think about gearing in my VIT ........

vit xfer wif ratios ....to sierra wif 6.4's running 4.1's in the diffs and anywhere between 37"' to 40"s I dont hink i will need to have the vit case in low very often depending how the auto copes wif it and in that case may be betta to run 4.6 or 4.8s and a sieera case only ........

or just go lux wif is it 5.1's xfer and 4.8's and deal wif the lack of onroad grunt

mmmmmm

who knows

Nah haven't progressed much yet Dan, but I'll deffinetly be running that setup. Am just waiting to get the 4runner back on the road, then the auto and twin xfer is next on the list.....
