Sportrak(Feroza) Hybrid Build.

Post by Mantamac »

I fancy building a dedicated off-roader out of my little Sportrak. Mainly because it is a bit different and because most of my mates have Landys. I've been going a littel bit silly on ebay the last weekand so far I have purchased:

Toyota Hilux front and rear axles,
Spool for rear axle,
31-10.5-15 Mud terrains,
A complete 1987 3.5 EFI Range Rover with gas(LPG) conversion,
a pair of Bucket seats and harness,
Large pipe bender,
Medium bar and box section bender,
and a Donkey saw to do all the heavy cutting.

My plan is to use the Sportrak chassis and body with coil sprung toyota axles. Range rover auto and V8. Loose the rear roof section and fabricate a rear bukhead to make it a pick-up. Fuel tank and gas tank in load area. External cage, rock sliders, new front and rear winch bumpers and plenty of armour. Radiator in rear load area behind cab to keep the mud out of it and make room for the V8 and winch and obviously front and rear winches.
Its a lot of work I know, but I have access to a good workshop and equipment and a good bit of spare time. I am quite good at fabrication and don't mind hard work.
What does everyone think? Good or bad idea? The stuff is paid for so its going to get built anyway, but I'd be interested to know what people think or if anyone has any good advice or experience with any of the components I intend to use.

Good question. Extending the wheelbase would help with approach and departure angles but I only plan to run a maximum of 34" tyres because of the possible new ruls for winch comp events! Because of this ramp break over angle will suffer.
I plan to set the chassis (body still attached) on stands, fit the wheels and tyres to the axles and dummy it all up and settle on the best compromise.

Fingers crossed!
