Sierra Front wheel bearings

Post by Superduki »

Ive got a 89 WT and im forever spitting front wheel bearings, ive tried three different types of bearing companys, pressuming the rollers were of different size, none to which work. i seal all components with three bond and get a maximum of probably 3 months without running my offroad tyres, which are only 31inch simex extreme trekkers. The adjusting nut is at the end of its thread and still the bearing is loose. Has anyone else had this drama? is there like a way to shim it out or a different bearing set up? Any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to go to hilux diffs just yet.
Cheers, Simon.

something may be missing, hard to say.
try pulling down a set up at the wreckers, make sure you got it all right.
my front wheel bearings last for years, with huge offset and 31's.
its usually rears that die regularly.
mud kills them, but not that quick.
I believe wt and nt front bearings are the same, but worth looking into that.

yeha, go and pull down phils, something must be missing. when they become loose is it straigh after you put em in, what happens when you nip em up after the first time. i got mine from bsc bearings, seems to last so far....

the bearings are probably tapered, tho I've never looked.
tapered bearings must go in the right way, or they won't tighten up.
I doubt this is you're problem, but worth looking into.

31" simex in hobart eh!, can't say ive seen your zook around.

I have mongrels that i drive on all the time atm and we do have to tighen them probably once a month cause the bigger tyres make them to loosen quickly. So u might be doing something wrong, 3 motnhs on road tyres is to fast...

Not mine.
look ma no wheels on the ground... :)

I agree 3 months is way to quick. i would want to check the mating surfaces out.

Did u do the wheel bearings urself? might pay someone else to fit them and then u can winge back if they wear out again so quick.

sierra front wheel bearings

Post by Superduki »

Thanks guys, nicbeer, yes i do them myself as im an 3rd year apprentice mechanic. i might try changing the complete hub as the bearing outer cup isnt the tightest fit. brenno, yeah thanks but its got bsc bearings in it this time round. Derelict frog - you have seen me round, im phils mate with the white soft top. I ran the new bearings in for a couple of days then nipped them up again. Just thought maybe someone else has had these problems!!! Thanks again.

When I replaced my right bearings the outer cup could spin in the hub. Took them back to the shop to check if I had the right ones. Yep right ones. They than sold me some lock tight stuff ( that I cant find right now, but I did find my long lost steel ruler  ) it bonds it to the hub. Made just for that type of problem. Cheeper than a new hub.

I have found on my NT that it is possible to over-tighten the lock nut putting too much pressure on the bearing that would certainly cause them to wear abnormaly fast ... doesn't sound like your prob tho???
If it's already been thought of...
There has to be a better way...
