Storage in a zook

I was trying to think how to store all my crap in the zook.. but figured you guys might have solved the problems better than I could.

So with the rear seats removed.. how does one store

a. Recovery gear
b. Jerry Can
c. Water
d. Smallish esky
e. Camping gear
f. Some Tools..

Has anyone knocked up something custom?? or do you guys just chuck it all in and hope for the best.

pretty simple to knock up

ive got spare tire.shovel...floor jack..axe...5l coolant...5l oil....tools...more reco gear like snatch and peices of carpet...most of it fits in a milk crate...i can fit a mid size esky and probs more...just gotta be a tetris master

The second largest ARB spacecase fits pretty well in the back of a sierra and gives plenty of secure, waterproof, lockable storage. you will be surprised how much gear these will swallow.

It is 90cm wide which is a snug fit between the wheelwells.
A small esky will fit in front of it between the case and the seats so you can get to it whilst in the car.

I am not a bog fan of jerry cans inside a car - they always seem to leak vapour. The 10l Rheem black plastic ones with the yellow spout seem to seal pretty well though.

The trick with sierras is packing light and being disciplined. I have built storage units for the back of sierras, but in general you tend to loose usable space and add a fair bit of weight just for the privelege of having a drawer or two.

Yes the ARB spacecase's are a good idea I have two different ones.
One (for recovery gear/spares etc) when out on day trips, and I can still use one seat.
And another that takes up the whole rear (with seats still in car just folded up) for weekends away.
If I get motivated will take some pics.

I whipped this little puppy up at work. Keeps everything clean, neat and tidy. And then just lock the back door so no one can get in. My swag and fridge tie down on top. Its all out of marine ply and carpet so moisture isn't a problem.

Something like this I need for mine. A removable one would be the go so I can have the rear seats In if needed. Easy enough to knock up aswell.

i used to work from my sierra. it had only a bikini top and a sort of ute convertion (mdf panel) . I built a shelf out of thick MDF and sealed it with marine varnish. it bolted atop the wheel wells and had tie down points. i could fit parts and tools under the shelf and lock the tailgate for security. still had room for a load ontop of the shelf.

incidently i once removed the tailgate and was able to ft a cement mixer hired from bunnings in the back. looked hilarious, like a bob the builder cement truck.

cant you just reach in and open the tailgate from the inside when its locked on the outside? Because even when they are locked the lever on the inside will still open it.

Yep this is true, but the distance between the inside of the tailgate and the storage box is next to nothing so you cant get down there.

I just used the large lockable aluminium toolboxes. Sealed the edges with silicon and put a rubber seal around the edge to keep out dust etc. Worked a treat for many years

Can you fit 2 of those lying on their sides ? That would be heaps of storage

If not, they are stackable Stack 2 high and strap them down.

These space cases are great as the are water and dust proof and lockable Plus if you know someone in the Army they are cheap

If you put them right near the tailgate it should still give you a bit of 'stuff' room behind the seats. And it wont fall out the back

There is a way around it, and that is to block that internal lever off so even if you can slide your hand in you cant open it! only you with the key and the tailgate open. i might do that on the weekend, cos with a softtop securing the the rear drawers is a problem! So if they cant open me tailgate they cant open me drawers!

Hi Mr Emu, your drawers look fantastic... am looking at making some for my zook so stuff doesn't get stolen out of it anymore .

Did you make some sort of frame for this setup? Do you remember how much the slides cost? What is the edging around the marine carpet on the actual drawer made of, or did you just glue the carpet down and paint the marine ply? Don't suppose you made any plans or anything like that did you?
