Painting Wheels

Hi Guys

I have searched for this and couldnt find anything

Basically I have white sunraysias on my truck and want to paint them black

Would sanding them back, giving and undercoat of primer then a couple of coats of black be the way to go ?

Any help much appreciated

definitely mate, did the exact same thing last wkend to a set of wheels and worked a treat, after all its a 4WD

but yeh thats a good method, unless u wanna get them snadblasted and powdercoated, bout $30 a rim for both

I also painted my wheels last Wednesday

I got bored of the white and went to Satin Black...

I sanded them back.. wiped them with wax and grease remover.. then painted them with VHT Quick Coat acrylic enamel. As said, its only for 4x4ing and you can touch em up if they get scratched anyways

They came up really nice, very happy with them.

i also painted my wheels last week... they were white and now iv painted them matt black.

ut i just used the $3.00 pressure pack and did a few coats while they were still on the car. so i only painted the outside. but they came up looking good, and im happy. if they scratch i'll just get the can and touch them up.

ENAMEL EPOXY is a bit tougher and resists oil and fluid. made by galmet or comes in wattyl (kill rust) I like to put a coat of clear over the top .
Any way will be ok as long as you make the surface clean and oil free

id get them sand blasted and cleaned up and put it in to the powder coaters it always turns out looking better then any pressure pack

I looked into that but at $60 - $90 a rim, a bit dear. seeing they only cost $50 brand new.

I've always used "Appliance White" enamel for mine, used for painting fridges, etc.

Clean up your wheels, then as you do each coat, hit it with a hairdryer to give a better lasting finish.

i used white knight matt black, did 5 coats on all thinking it would be stronger, but didnt sand em

, some mud when dried on the rims ate the paint off, and now i have colling wood rims, but they are always coverd in mud so ill leave em how they are,

they looked trick when finished, wish id sanded em first

you could use them hammertone spray cans from your local bunnings store !

Sanding back and painting is fine. Just use some prepwash or wax and grease remover first, as wheels often have silicone on them which results in a patchy finish.

I galvanised my last set of rims, cheaper than powdercoating and more durable.

i think this is the best way to do it, well, that what i did anyway. a good automotice enamel, when mixed right with hardeners, and sprayed from a air gun, will come up better than new. will also have a gloss finish, and will set pretty damn hard. clear over if you want, but there's really no need.

and also, prep is the key. dry, oil/grease free, no dust/wind and you'll be right.

Good prep as previously mentioned, rub them back to roughen up, prep wash and 2 pak with appropriate hardener added and they will come up mint. Leaves a gloss finish and they will last a lot longer than a rattle can.

yeh i just resprayed my DD wheels the other day.

1) Rub down wheels with turps to remove grime and dirt, leave to dry
2) Coat with Primer (i did two coats because i had a spare can)
3) Spray with paint (preferably gloss, as the enamel will repel dirt, grime etc alot better than a matt or satin finish.
4) Leave to dry
5) Respray with another 1 or 2 coats.
6) Leave to dry
7) Add final coat of clear gloss (again i did two coats, but thats a bit of overkill as i dont want it coming off)

Total Cost: $15 for (4) Rims.
