You may find that the bell housing is different but that is a bolt on deal, the starter motor on a 3y/4y is on the drivers side but on a diesel i am pretty sure it is on the passenger side, also youmay have differences with flywheels and clutches ,exhaust and of course issues with electrics for glow plugs and shut of etc, maybe worth a trip to the wreckers to look at both motors side by side and work out if it is going to be easy, you may find it is really not worth it and you can get a lot more benefit from rebuilding your 3y with a bit of head work, extractors and a change of camshaft. thats what I did a while ago for my sons 85 lux. Heaps better down low and a hell of a lot quicker
